Is there any functional difference between the DME and KLR units of a Turbo vs. a TurboS, other than the chip itself???
In other words, can I turn a non-S DME or KLR into one(s) for an S simply by swapping the correct chip???
TIA

The KLR will work just swap the chip.
All Turbo S cars came with a 28-pin DME. If the non-S DME has a 28-pin you are fine, swap the chip.
If you have a 24-pin DME, it's not possible to swap the chip. We are able to convert the 28-pin chip to 24-pin chip if needed.
The above does not apply to the Vitesse chip/board as the same board works on both DMEs.

Thanks John... should have thought to just ask you directly.
Also, now that you mention it, do I recall correctly that, 28 pin DMEs started showing up in all the '88 models (when the S first appeared)? In any case, I assume I shouldn't expect to see a 28 pin DME in any '86 or'87?

I can second that, make sure you have the right computer (right amount of pins) before you buy. My computer went out last spring on me and I had to make sure I had the right computer with the right pins to work.

The DME hardware did not change over the years. As John said, you can easily convert any 28 pin eprom to 24 pin or vice versa. You can also convert the DME circuit board to both sizes. You can even convert a late 944 or 911 3.2 unit to run in a 951. Those boards would run of course only in 28 pin mode.
On some early ROW units the catalytic converter section of the hardware may not be soldered on the analog board. Not a big deal to change that.
I got a VERY EARLY version of a 951 DME from Porsche Development and it already used the 28 pin eprom. Even the part for the catalytic converter was implemented.
