My speedometer is broken so I replaced the white plastic gear shaft and the sender in the transmission. It did not fix the problem.
Some people have said that when the odometer gear brakes it will also cause the speedometer not to work? Is this definately true? Can another gear break and cause this problem in the gauge cluster?

I have never seen the speedometer or the odometer work, it must have broken for the previous owner. It is the original transmission in the car, 87 951. The new speedometer stuff in the transmission was from an 86 944 na, but it looked the exact same.

Well, here is the thing.
If there is ANY chance that the trans came from a 924S, it will have the drive sensor boss, BUT IT WILL NOT HAVE THE DRIVE GEAR INSIDE THE CASE.
Pretty sneaky.
You can pop the left output off and stick the nylon gear in there, if you think this might be the case.

I am sure its the original transmission, I have all the records from new, unless a change was never recorded. If it comes to it I will take the sender off and see if the white plastic piece spins freely, which I assume it would if it is a 924s transmission?
Does anyone know of common speedometer problem in the gauge cluster?

My speedo and odometer stopped working in my '86 951. It is a common problem. You can order the gear and replace it yourself - it is not hard. I got my gear at Vertex auto (it is on pg. 161 for $24.00). I had the whole thing done in less than 1 hour. It comes with instructions. You may also be able to find these gears on ebay. Good luck.
