Default Drilling holes instead of open wastegate dump

I have heard that if you atmospherically dump the wastegate on these cars it is way to loud and annoying, but could I just drill four or five holes in the wastegate pipe to get the sound when i get on the gas?

If its dumped, youll only hear it when the wastegate is open... And when itsopen chances are youre not going to care or notice

Holes wont do anything different. The wastegate is open or closed, and its closed at low throttle/no boost/etc.

I don't care if it makes 15 extra hp, the sound of an wastegate dump isn't worth it IMO.

Excuse my ignorance, but what is this sound that you are refering to?

I have never heard an open wastegate...

When its dumped it sounds like ripping canvas, but its masked by the other sounds. You only hear it when the WG is open, so during shifts under boost, when youve hit max boost, etc.

This is a Subaru WRX, with the wastegate dumped to ATM.

Remember that even when your WG is closed the exit pipe from the WG is still connected to the rest of your exhaust system. So if you drill a hole between your WG and the rest of the system, you will have some exhaust and noise coming out of the hole(s) even at idle, let alone when you WG is open.

It's hard to imagine what your idea would sound like. Keep in mind that drilling holes in pipes is how some musical instruments are made (e.g. flutes, etc.). While I am not suggesting that your car will sound like a calliope, you could likely tune the sound based on the number of holes you drill.

An open WG is loud, whether or not you find it annoying is subjective. I don't find mine annoying, but thats just me. The people I drive past probably do...

I'm not positive how that is setup on a 951 (never seen one) but I'd imagine the wastegate is tied into the exhaust, so drilling holes would make a big exhaust leak...

I think MAF + quiet exhaust + open dump = best sound ever. Next turbo car (hey maybe my 944) will have a vaccuum operated exhaust dump (runs off of your wastegate) with atmos. dump. quiet until boost

This is a considerable amount of work if you decide you don't like it. Where are you located? I am sure there is an event nearby or someone who would give you a ride so you could hear it for yourself first.
