Check out the new kid on the block. This is abusrdly fast and absurdly expensive.
Bugatti Veyron.
Cranking out 987 horsepower, the Veyron needs just 2.5 seconds to reach 62 miles per hour, and will hit 250 mph flat-out in around 55 seconds.
0-188 in less than 17 seconds. With a Vitesse chip, hey you might could shave that down to 16.5.
Of course, you could save the money it cost and buy 100 951's at an average of $12,500 each and have the biggest fleet of 951's in history and make the guiness book of world records.

Top speed was about 160 for the 951 with the 951S maybe a few mph more while the 928 was a 165-170mph car.
I have a scanned copy of the Road and Track that compared every Porsche model in 1986. I'll check it when I get home for the 929S/S4 specs.
According to the Porsce website, in 1989, the 928S4 was rated for 270kph while the 928GT was 275kph.
The 951S is rated at 260kph.
Curiously, the 1989 930 is rated at 260kph also....

leave it to Porsche to play politics with goddamned cars.
wasnt this around the point where the 928 was supposed to overtake the 911 as their flagship sports car?

Don't forget that the 928 was a GT car while the 930 was a sports car. It's not surprising that the 928 had a higher top speed.

well yeah.
so is Porsche going that way with the 911 now?
are the 911's becoming GT's while the role of "sports car" is left to the cayman/boxsters?

Word is the Primerica (release +/- 2009) will become their "GT" car and the 911 will be more of a true sports car once again with the Cayman (presumably) becoming the entry-level or mid-level sport model. I haven't heard but suspect this probably means curtains for the 986 and 987.

I thought the Cayman was built on the 986/987 chassis; just with a dedicated hardtop and different coach.

I dissagree. The 928s were never even marginally faster then the 944T, or TS for the matter.
The '78 928 pumped 240/268 and could only run a 8.1 0-60, and topped at 142mph. So the 944 N/A basically has the same specs, except HP and torque.
The '89 928 S4GT basically matched the 944TS specs. The S4GT ran a 5.3 0-60, and REPORTED maximum speed was 163.5mph. It does say the S4GT could get over 170mph on a flat straight road though.
Then again, take into consideration the $170,000 price tag (new)...and the 944T(S) will beat them hands down.

I remember reading that the 1989 944 Turbo had the quickest 50 mph to 80 mph time of all production cars of that year - including the Ferrari Testarossa. This is indicative of passing power on the highway. Just something I found interesting.

10-15kph is a decent differnece.
As for the 50-80 times I read that as well. Is that the 5th gear roll on or was it measured by downshifting?
