Is adding a timing belt auto tensioner a good idea for an '86 951?

Depends....there's a over a foot of room with the radiator and condensor out of the way.

Take out the nose panel and intercooler and you could drill and tap from the front kneeling down without even getting under the car.

Pictures of bosses thanks to 951and944S:

First pic is of an 86 block with bosses not drilled. Seemed Porsche realized in design that a tensioner was needed and added the bosses for later use. Sounds like to me that they're indeed a benefit to those cars without.



Second pic is of an 87 up model with factory drilled tensioner bosses:
