Anyone ever tried an S4 engine swap?

The RS2 engine is 2.2L 5 cyl
making 315HP, 302 Ft lbs and weights 3500lbs.
It is a nice car, i've seen it last week at my company.
Our 951 is 2.5L should get better power than that.

Well, I think newer model S4 (or RS4) engine is more suitable for 944 engine bay, First of all its V6 (instead of r5 what will be hard to fit) and it's 2.7 liter twin turbocharged, with 30 valve (5 per cilinder).
Rs 4 engine can do 420 hp (600+nm) just by adding a chip. But you can allway's put 2*2871 into that and make 850+hp. .
Regular S4 engine is rated 195 kw when its stock, first stage takes youto 240kw.

I'll ge the model specifics tomorrow. But my unserdtanding is the 700 hp was obtainable but goin to overside turbo, bypass pipe, larger injectors, and chip. The same kind of upgrades that put our cars in the 450-500 hp range.

I'd like to see a 951 motor that had only a bigger turbo, bypass pipe, larger injectors and chip with 450-500hp. To get to those numbers add significant headwork, cam, wastegate, piggyback at a minimum, and usually race fuel.
Be realistic. Special Tool is running amongst the highest numbers seen on a 951 motor and take a run through what he's done to do it. Never mind that his peak numbers are not on pump gas.
The newer S4 motor is a better fit how? That's a very wide motor. Take a look at the 951 engine bay and tell me how that motor will fit easily. That motor is notoriously unreliable as well. They eat turbos, stock or aftermarket, with alarming regularity.
There are only two worthwhile choices. Build up the 951 motor like Special Tool has done, or install a v-8 the way TonyG has done.

I would like to go on record as saying that I believe my car would give Tony's car a swirly.

So while on the subject...how reliable are mildly high mileage A4s or S4s? I am thinking about getting another daily driver and I have considered one of these. I don't want huge numbers, the most I would probably do would be a chip. Just wondering what the consensus is and if there are years to look for or years to stay away from.

Please tell me which company makes this 420 hp chip, because I have been around S4's for a long time, and if you want that kind of power it is from a turbo swap, not a simple chip. Normal K03's on the B5 S4 are crap. To get good power and reliability you need to swap to the K04. Most of these kits can be found on AWEtuning.com or on GOAPR.com. Both very knowlegable for turbo upgrades. As far as first gen S4's and RS2's they are a very bulletproof engine. There is a gentleman by the name of Hans Dahlback that modifies VW's and audi and uses as very modified RS2 engine in his widebody golf. In recent dynos it has put down 800 at the wheels on low boost. He claims 1200 with the boost turned up but I think someone is smoking some cheeba. His website is Audituning.com and they are out of sweeden. All in all, I got on this forum because I was interested in a 944 turbo and was just watching the boards and thought I would get involved.

The chip what I was talking about is used on RS4 not S4. RS4 stock power is around 380hp, not so difficult to get extra 40 hp out of turbo car. S4 can do around 310hp with chip not more with stock turbos, also stay away from car manufactured before 2000, their exhaust manifolds tend to crack and that will kill turbine wheels of your turbos. If you decide to go with S4tt engine then first thing is to swap exahust manny's or make custom ones. Check for Chip options on SKN motorsport in germany, they are pretty respected there..
Hans Dahlback is respected tuner, he's car is awsome but I have also good contacts in finland, and guy there is respected tuner in VW/Audi world. If you are intrested, I can give you a contact.
As far s fitting v6 into 951, I have no clue, I just thougt it can be done, and its foar more modern transplant thant 350. I think it can be done with custom exhaust manny's and some other special parts

Hello. Total newbie on this board. To me the 2.7tt would be the most natural transplant. Had the 944 continued it's production, I'm sure that V6's would have entered the fold.
I'm a tech for a german auto repair shop in my town. My boss has a 2001 S4, full stage 3 car. We think it makes about 400 at the wheels. He wants to do a 3.0 build. I'd love to grab his old motor that we've done all the maintenance to and put it in my 85.5 NA 944.
I have engine compartment dimentions for my 944, but don't have engine dimentions on the 2.7tt motor. Hopefully someone can chime in with those.
I know that I can get on ebay the 924 turbo bell housing. Everything else "should" fall in place. I know the brake booster might be an issue. I'm sure that the throttle by wire issue can be solved.
I didn't mean to hijack the thread. But I think that if I'm gonna put anything other than a Porsche motor in my 944, it would be the 2.7tt.
Thanks.

The RS2 IL5 cylinder turbo is a strong powerplant, the B5 RS4 V6 is a great engine but has been known to need cams and/or turbos over 100k. Just my opinion but if you are going to turn a 944 into a mongrel it may as well have a domestic V8.

Sounds like an interesting swap, but not too many guys here will have that info off hand. You're better off checking VW Vortex for those 2.7tt dimensions.
Im guessing it would be a tight fit.

That's what I'm going to try. I will repost with measurements once I find out.

Do you really want to put this into an N/A shell?
The motor is impressive, however to get the car will need the brakes upgraded, and the suspension package may leave some to be desired. Just my .02, but you may want to find a turo with a snapped belt, or better yet one that needs a clutch. Sell the motor and you should be ahead.
