Default Desperately seeking AC advice

I have a 87 951 that my boys and I just bought and are having an absolute ball with. However, the AC was supposedly converted to 134a but doesn't work. When I read the old invoices that came with the car it looks like they changed a "lowside" and a "highside" fitting and then charged it with R-134a. The note on the old invoice says that they were unable to charge the system.

I took it to my local Porsche dealer and they evacuated it and charged it with R-134a with dye to find the leak. It died after about a week and I took it back in. They said that I need a new compressor and a new pressure switch. The parts:

P944-126-008-00 Compressor $1792 with 2 hours labor
P944-573-201-00 Pressure Switch $103 with 8 hours labor since it is under the dash

Total estimate is $3200... I need AC in DC, but this is ridiculous.

It seems like I can do a most of this myself. But how do they know the pressure switch is bad? And what the heck is that anyway?

What else should I change for a real R-134a conversion? I have seen full AC kits for sale at Pelican for what looks to be reasonable prices.

Please help - Jack

What do they mean by pressure switch? There is one behind the driver side headlight that shuts the compressor off if pressure in the system gets too low. it should be about 30 mins labor to replace. there is an expansion valve on the evaporator, which is sort of under the dash, but you can get to in from under the hood by pulling the blower motor. The valve itself should cost under $40.

O don't know of any switch under the dash.

i have a condensor i believe is in working order if you're interested. it's fairly easy to swap out, a couple of bolts, a new belt, and tighten the adjustment rod.

let me know if you are interested and i can ship it quick.

I did the griffith conversion with their Khuel Compressor kit and upgraded condenser and in the mornings I can see my breath in the car. I think the total for parts was around 800.00 but that included a new barrier high side hose, compressor, drier, o-rings, Low side hose and condenser. works great! good luck...
