Default Halfshaft Torque Specs

Can someone with a Helms/Haynes manual help me out by providing me with the torque specs for the halfshafts on a 1986 944 Turbo?

For some reason 27 comes to mind, but I'd have to check. Honestly I say put locktite on those suckers, torque the sh*t out of them and safety wire 'em while you're at it. Preferably weld 'em too.

I hate when they come loose.

Oh, and replace the stupid triple-square head bolts with metric allen-heads. You'll live much happier.

27 sounds right to me. Been a while though.

Just checked the book. 41nm or 30 ft/lbs. Make sure the threads are clean and dry.

Factory manuals. 31 ftlbs.

Make sure that the bolts are in good shape, make sure that the mating surfaces are clean (the surface of the CV and the flange) and you'll be fine. I've never had a problem with the bolts coming loose. You may use some loktite blue on them, but it's really not necessary. Use the factory bolts, or at least make sure that the replacement bolts are grade 8.8 bolts.

Dal.

I know, I'm being paranoid. Dropped a half-shaft on the 944 due to the bolts backing out a while back - fortunately I was only going like 5 mph and not 80 mph on the freeway where the axle could've stuck in the ground and pole-vaulted the *** end of the car or torn it off (tow truck guy said he's seen this). No, it wasn't me either - I'd never taken them off (maybe just got loose over time). On the other hand, I'd never really checked them either. I do now.

I really do recommend the triple-square-to-allen conversion with 8.8 or even 12 grade bolts though. Sucks to have to get a 60-mile AAA tow for want of a stupid triple-square tool that can't be easily found like an allen can. An allen-head tool was in my kit at the time and there was a hardware store within walking distance of where this happened that had (drum roll) NO TRIPLE-SQUARE TOOLS!!! Naturally they had a very nice assortment of metric allen wrenches.

I hate the triple-square. I really do. The ones on 951 turbo mounting bolts are similar beauties. Ditto on the cam. Kill 'em all, I say.

Thank you very much for the information and advice gentlemen.

I think the car has seen so much track duty that the last DE we ran had them starting to come loose. Would have been a hell of a thing had one dropped on the course but we were fortunate not to endure something like that.

I thought I had read 31 ft/lb in the past but we torqued them to 45 last time and they still came loose. Perhaps we will give the loctite a go this time around and we are definitely planning the allen head conversion.

I used 31lbs, and i reused those bolts several times, due to cv cleaning, then a diff oute flange seal leaking.

The PO had them off, 2 years before i took the car, after 2 years of owning the car, the driver's side came off, probably due to incorrect torque specs and pattern.
