How can you tell if the power steering rack needs replaced?
I am replacing the tie rods on my 87 944 Turbo. I noticed when torquing down the inside tie rod end that the steering rack has some "play" left and right as well as very slight play up and down. Does this indicate that the steering rack needs replaced?
What other indicators are normally looked at to asses the condition of the power steering rack.

Does it leak and do you get power assist. If if ain't leaking and it still works don't replace it. if it is leaking you can rebuild it. Some say that DIY rebuilds don't last, but the last one I did on my son's NA has been perfect for over 2 years now. It is easy to do, you just have to pay attention to detail.
