Guns: You can weld closed the seams and rain gutters, but it will be heavier than stock, and you will lose the rain channelling effect they create. It will be a royal PITA the first time it rains. Additionally, if you just use filler for the finish, it will definately crack under track and street usage.
This might be one of those things where the juice is not worth the squeeze.

Rich: How will it be a pain in the ***? you mean like rain dripping on you when you open the door? To get rid of the gap steel plates will be welded in, yes it will be hevier, but imho it will be worth the new look

Realistically, you're looking to make a 100% show car that "looks" like a race car, right?
For a car that would ever see the track, I can't imagine anyone cutting out structural portions of the car and adding weight up high in the roof.
Lighter and stronger is the way for track cars. Not heavier, weaker.
For a show car, however, it would definitely look fantastic.
