Higher gears produce more load and then you can get a missfire due to the plug/wire/cap not being able to deliever enough spark to match the load, that is not there in lower gears. I know this from personal experience.
I was fine at full boost and redline in 1st and 2nd gear. Then in 3rd, 4th, etc. I would get missfire. And the higher the gear, the lower the rpm the missfire would occur, due to increaded load at lower revs. Due to a bad (new) plug wire that had worked the boot a little loose and was arching to the block.
