Best ways to increase throttle response?
Hi I'm a proud new owner of a 87 944 Turbo, it is in excellent shape inside and out. The previous owner upgraded the Turbo to an 89 Turbo S and also had some Autothority chips installed, boost controller etc., over $4000 of work(incl. upgraded Turbo, water pump, timing belt etc.) was done less than 3000 miles ago. The car supposdly has around 300Hp and is in excellent mechanical condition.
Here's the problem, it has very little power until about 4,500rpm. My previous car was a BMW M Coupe(S52 motor, 246hp, 254Tq) and the 944 Turbo is no where near the M Coupe under 4,500rpm. BUT the 944T is an absolute rocket on the highway, it pulls and pulls and then I start beliveing the 300Hp claim.
What can I do to improve acceleration at lower rpm? I know it's a turbo and never going to pull hard off the line but I know this car is capable of more. How can I make the power curve more Linear? Right now it feels like I'm driving a Hond Accord(not the V6 either) until about 4,500rpm and then I feel like I'm getting shot out of a rocket! 70mph-90mph seems like it takes about 3 sec!
Please help, any ideas would be appreiated, I'm new to the Turbo world. I love the 944 Turbo and have already ordered a 3" cat bypass pipe and 3" exhaust from Broadfoot Racing. It will be installed by next Wednesday. I'm hoping that will make a little differance.
What size turbo do the 89 Turbo S have?

The wastegate won't matter as it only opens when told to by your boost controller.
A 3" exhaust from turbo to tail will help get the turbo spinning quicker. It made a big difference in my car w/ stock motor and turbo.
I'd suggest posting questions to this forum asking for recommendations before you start buying parts (possibly unnecessarily, like the wastegate). There's a lot of knowledge here and people that have tried various go-fast bits. Also, hope you have better luck getting your parts from Broadfoot than other forum members have.

Get the MAF from Vitesse and get an electronic boost controller. If you're seeing full boost at 4500 rpm, somethings wrong. I have a 951S and see full boost by 3000 rpm and have 7psi at around 2600.
If you don't want to spend the money for the MAF, get a set of Vitesse chips and the electronic boost controller.
I just did the MAF and it does make a huge difference in throttle response...

Thanks for the replies. So far Broadfoot has been a great.
I guess the first thing I need to do is find out exactly what "chips" are in the car. I seem to read a lot of good things about Vitesse. I have been told that Weltmeister also make good chips?
Everyone seems to agree(so far)that the MAF is the way to go.

Well a very simple way is to ensure the throttle cable is snug. They stretch over time and get a little loose. You can tighten so that as soon as the cable moves you hear the click of the TPS.
It won't make the car any faster, but will make the car more reponsive if it was loose. Also the 951 has long throttle pedal. THis means compared to new cars the throttle moves through a long arc. This a little throttle input does not open it much. Newer cars tend to open farther for the same foot movement. Nice to make a slower car seem faster.
Ohh... below 3000 rpm the 944 Turbo S especially is a bit of a dog. It just the nature of the car and there is not that much you can do. Even when you swap turbos you still can't get as much hp below 3000 as you can in larger displacment NA motor.

the point is, a wastegate won't improve spool, or drivability before 3000 (in his case, 4500) rpm. A wastgate IS usefull once in boost.
First thing you need to do is find out why your building boost so late. Usuall supects are leaky headers and crossover pipes. Could be a clogged cat too.
What boost are you running, what boost controller do you have, and exactly what RPM do you see full boost (and say which gear that is)
I'll be installing a MAF and piggy back, probably this weekend, I may post my results soon.
