Question about OPRV Alignment?
Looks like I will be replacing my oil cooler housing seals! do I need to buy the alignment tool or is it possible to align the OPRV with the OPRV itself? I searched the archives but didn't find an answer. Any help would be great!

You can probably get away without it if you have a one-piece valve. If you have a three piece valve, the alignment tool is not really optional. 944online.com loans the alignment tools (against a deposit) if you buy the seals from them. See write-up in link below.

I've personally never used the alignment tool, maybe I've been lucky, but I usually don't tighten all the bolts until the OPRV is installed. I mean the little double oring coupling is almost it's own alignment tool with the bolt pattern.

If the alignment is off will it just not go in or is there a chance of it bing not aligned being installed and not working. In other words if it goes in will it work? If that is the case I may try a go at it without the tool. I don't mind buying the tool it is waiting for it to show up and holding up getting this done that is the problem....

YOu have the 86 three pc? It's on a spring and will move as you install it. Even the later model ones move a bit as well. Put new orings on the little tube, stick it in the housing, spray a bit of tacky gasket stuff on the side of the gasket to the housing, stab it, install the bolts, stick in the OPRV and tighten it by hand, snug it all up.

I am about to replace my oil cooler seal also and was wondering this exact question. My car is an 86' and I didn't use the tool on my previous 86' 951 and never had a problem. Can someone elaborate on putting the OPRV in successfully without using the tool?
