Default 951 vs. Pontiac WS6 :)

After a 2nd, 3rd gear redline run comment made by Firebird owner at red-light after getting smoked by 4 cylinder with less then half the displacement:

“Damn!!! Your car is F^%$&IN fast!!!

FYI, was early on Sat morning and almost no traffic and on 6 lane highway.

(His exhaust did not sound stock)

Engine : V8, OHV, front engine RWD
Displacement : 5,665 cc
Valve : 16 valves, 2 valves per cylinder
Transmission : 6-spd manual, 4-spd automatic
Fuel economy : city - 18-19 mpg
highway - 26-28 mpg

Suspension : F - Independent unequal length arms
R - Live Salisburg axle
Brakes : F - Vented discs
R - Vented discs

Horsepower : 320-325 hp @ 5200 rpm
Torque : 340-350 lb-ft @ 4000 rpm
Redline : 6000 rpm

Top speed : 165 mph(estimated)
0-60 mph : 5.2 sec.(manual), 6.0 sec.(auto)
0-¼ mile : 13.4 sec @ 106.2 mph(manual)
60-0 braking distance : 120 ft
200 ft skidpad : 0.88 g

Curb Weight : 3495-3517 lbs(coupe), 3605-3627 lbs(convertible)

Press Coverage :
The V8-powered Pontiac Firebird will always be remembered for leaving the stench of burning rubber at every traffic light. The Firebird Trans Am has the one of the highest horsepower-per-dollar ratio ever - a ratio beaten only by the new supercharged Mustang Cobra. And in WS6 trim, it could pretty much go head-to-head with 75-grand Porsche 911s at the dragstrip. No wonder the Firebird became a cult classic by the time it was discontinued at the end of 2002, along with its Camaro twin.
Available in coupe or convertible form, the Pontiac Firebird Trans Am came standard with a 310 hp V8 engine derived from the Corvette LS1 small block. The Trans Am WS6 is a higher trim level, tuned by F-Body tuners SLP, which added a Ram Air cold air intake, hood scoop and 15 more horses. The WS6 package is also available on the Formula, which is essentially a stripped-down version of the Trans Am. The loaded Trans Am came with an electric driver's seat, rear spoiler, unique front bumper and removable roof panels on the coupe, in addition to the Formula's high-speed tires, sporty suspension and 10-speaker stereo. Transmission choices were a four-speed automatic and a six-speed manual in which both fifth and sixth gears were overdrive. SLP also offered a Firehawk version with an optional exhaust system that bumped up horsepower to 335 hp. Traction control, ABS and dual airbags are standard on all models

Let's see here, stock power of WS6 is 325 HP at 3,500 lbs. (10.79lb/HP) Stock 951 is 227 HP at 3,000 lbs. (13.21lb/hp) but a lightly modded 951 will push a good 50-65 hp more putting it around 272-287 hp (11.02-10.45lb/HP). So, with that, both cars would have a good amount of power. The WS6 is FAST of the line with the 5.7 liter engine, something our 2.5 liter can't compare to in low end grunt. Overall, the WS6 is made to go fast, straight. The suspension and brakes are up to par or even close to be a sports car, just a go quick straight car. I wouldn't mind racing one but I don't think from a roll I would have a problem because I can outrun a C5 corvette. One car I WOULD take over my 951 in a heart beat is a new Z06 Corvette, that is a pure race car in street form!

I think it's still called a "Z06"

I'm not admitting that I watched the whole race yesterday (just the highlights), but did anyone else see the Z06 pace car with the really cool paint job? Jay Leno was driving it during the race... he even made a comment before the race started that this was the first time that the pace car at the Daytona 500 had more horsepower than the cars in the race.

That was a coool looking 'vette at Daytona yesterday. I even made a comment to the wife/kids when I saw it. I didn't know Jay Leno was driving it - what a lucky SOB!!!!

Yeah, C5s and WS6s are childs play for slightly modded 951s... but we can't even come CLOSE to touching that new Z06.

tested and confirmed...
0-60: 3.7
Quarter mile: 11.7 @ 125
1.04g on the skidpad
198mph

...ouch.

Don't go thinking one can outrun a LS-1 F-body or vette in a stock, or lightly modded 951....they are pretty consistant with 300hp to the wheels but are rated at 305 total on the regular models. They are heavy but that doesn't factor in a street race or drag race (which is what we're talking here).

That's pretty good pulling away from one in 2nd or 3rd. Good job!

Yeah, I'm really hoping mine will be able to out-do my brother's Z28 (last production year - '02 or '03 - whichever that was). Prior to my HG taking a vacation, we were very even accelerating, but he'd walk me at top end. That was when my car dyno'd at 214rwtq and 210rwhp... stock Turbo S turbo & chips. Since then I've added exhaust, DP WG, Autothority MAF & chips, and MBC, and when the head goes back on it'll also have 55# injectors, adj FPR, all new vacuum lines... oh, and a head gasket that can hold compression

Yea, I have run one before on the interstate and was no problem but this was a fairly low end race, as it started down low in 2nd through top of third for me.

I also assume he had an exhaust on it as it was as loud if not louder then mine with mine vent to atm.

And he was, obviously from his comment, VERY suprised that he lost.

So maybe exhaust would have given him another 15-25hp.

The new ZO6 is now in 996 Turbo and Ferrari territory, easily. Both in handling and accel. Plus, it is only 60K in the range of cars 2x that cost.

I guess I am the only person who had a Honda forum flashback when reading the title to this thread.

don't want to start a big flame war here and I'm a die hard Porsche fan, but the old Z06 was in 996TT territory and the new z06 is definately a competitor in performance with the new 997TT....

Aero: yes, I agree. I basically meant the current supercars.

I know the 997 all around is much improved then the 996. I guess that goes for the turbo as well?
