Default Why would my Turbo S run this cold?

I just got an 89 951 here's the thread: https://rennlist.com/forums/944-turbo-and-turbo-s-forum/250033-new-to-944-s-just-bought-89-951-and-need-help.html

The car runs very cold and I'm curious as to why? All I can think of is that the previous owner installed a VERY low temp thermostat, removed the thermostat, or the thermostat is stuck open.

In any case I need to plan on replacing the thermostat correct?

hmm I suppose the gauge or sender could be wrong. Is that common? IS there an easy test?

Here's where the temp gauge is after being _fully_ warmed up. It never goes above this on the freeway.

Does it reach this temperature fast and stays there? Does the gauge go up if you let the car sit and idle? Do both fans go on at all times?

The guages can be a bit off btw.

yes it does warm up pretty fast and tends to stay there on the freeway. When I get off the freeway and sit at a stoplight or something it goes up to a little above the bottom line.

Not sure about the fans, I'm not in tune with the car enough yet to tell when/if they come on

It seems that the cooling system is working well on your car, I wouldn't worry about it.

My guess,
Original thermostat = weak spring = opens early

Not all that alarming, IMO. Seems like a good thing. Heat is your enemy. As long as your coolant is circulating everywhere it belongs and the reading is based on fact, I wouldn't give this too much attention. Your pic is about where my car runs on the freeway and light driving. Summer stop and go can nudge the pointer slightly above the first hatch-mark.

Well yes before my thermostat was replaced with a new one, that was where mine sat. Now I have even faster warm up, and it sits on or only just below the first line, and will creep up in stop start traffic until the fans cut in at the second line.
Too cold and the oil will not be at optimum temp.

Car looks healthy to me. I like the 5 bar oil pressure at 3k. Your engine is happy.

To test your gauge, refer to the pic that UK952 posted. Remove the leads from the temperature sender (underneath the IC pipe on the head, it's the one with two spade type connections;one bigger than the other). Insert a variable resistor or potentiometer. Measuring with a meter, set the pot to the following values for each temp mark; 40degrees @ 287 ohms, 60 degrees@ 134 ohms, 80 degrees@70 ohms, 100 degrees@38 ohms, 115degrees@26 ohms. This will test the gauge. If you don't get these readings, the gauge is bad or not accurate.

Temp, oil pressure and volt meter all look pretty much identical to my car at 3k rpm. If I sit in traffic or a long stop light my aux cooling fans kick in so I've always assumed that things were working well.

You can tell when the fans turn on when at a complete stop. They make a fairly noticeable noise.

We had a long running thread (and poll) on the porsche club GB website and we all said below the line was normal till one person had a new factory stat fitted, then a few more had it done. Not urgent but if your in the area worth doing.
