Default Engine support

Hello everyone,
I'm planning on doing my oil pan gasket and i dont have an engine hoist. I'm trying to get some ideas on how to support the engine, maybe making some type of bar across the top.
Thanks

I'm sure I will be corrected if this is wrong, but I've always heard that to get to the bottom-end of our engines, you're best off leaving the engine in the care. I think you can remove the exhaust cross-over pipe, then the suspension cross-member, then drop the pan. It's involved, but I think it's supposed to be easier than yanking the entire engine.

Oh - and go ahead and throw rod bearings in while you're there - it's worth it.

I am in the the middle of an in-car freshening-up, I had the same dilema about lifting/supporting the motor. I decided to play it safe with a hoist. I the service manual there is a picture of an engine support that stradles the strut towers. Definitely do the rod bearings and rod nuts. I purchased all my components from Lindsey racing...

You have to support the engine from above. I placed a 6" long 4" x 4" wood placed alongside of each top strut mount in the engine compartment. A long 4' x 4" is placed on top of them, over the engine. Now measure the distance between the rear cambox lift ring and the front lift ring. Add 8" inches and cut the last 4" x 4". Put this 4" x 4" on top of the other. Move the long one to be near the center of the top one. I think that it will wind up just above the coolant tank. Screw the top one to the bottom one with a long lag bolt. Now install an 8" long eyebolt in the top 4" x 4" above each lift ring on the engine with the eye facing down. Use a large washer and hext nut on the top. Chain the lift rings to the eyebolts. Tighten the hex nuts to take the engine weight off of the motor mounts.

You can now remove the crossmember and the engine will remain supported.
