Thius may be a stupid question, but I was wondering if it were at all possible to rent this 9201 tool from a kragen or autozone? I tried searching, but didn't really come up with anything that helps me here.

Nope. There used to be a tool rental club here but it died off. It was taking too long to get the tool back from the renters. It's a $300-$400 tool, and a delicate mechanisim. Not the sort of thing you can rent cheaply. The Krikit is pretty good though and quite cheap.

dont think so, you might be able to borrow one from a local lister. maybe SF or something.

do you need a tensioning or a whole belt replacement?

if you need a tensioning, i can reccomend a shop in sac that did mine for decently cheap.

When I purchased the 9201 tool my logic was this....

1. A belt job at the time cost $300.
2. The tool at the time cost $700 (1986).
3. After two self performed belt jobs, the tool would pay for itself.
4. I plan to never sell my 951.

How many belt jobs have I done? 15-20. When I do repairs like valve job, head gasket, water pump, radiator replacement, front seals, all require belt removal and retention. Was the purchase worth the cost? YES. Do I want to rent my 9201 tool? No.

Thats good thinking Bill, I never had to take off any belts for radiator replacement, but I see your logic and it seems right to me. I will probably just end up purchasing the tool because it will pay for itself soon enough

Now a t-belt with water pump is about 800.00 so the math is even better.

There is the 'kriket' alternative as well, though I use the tool just to be safe. The other thing that works is to call for a "belt tensioning party" of local members.

So with the 9201 being that it is so delicate & all, how often does it need to be recalibrated & where does one get it done (dealer?)? Also, other than a place like Sunset that offers decent discounts are there any other sources with good prices for the tool? (Thinking about buying one)

Frank's Auto in Sac does almost all the work on my car (i only let them do oil changes cuz it's in there every 3k or so miles, so it's kind of a "what the hell, save me some hassle" type deal), but yeah, they've done all the work on my 951 and my old n/a, and they've never done anything wrong with my car, and they've always got 911's and various german cars in there so if your car is waiting outside, it's a good opportunity for a gratuitous Porsche shot. not to mention a ferrari 308 or 348 in there, and some 356 race cars and i think a 550 racer. REALLY cool place just to hang out if they let you.

You can purchase a calibration bar for the tool. Put the bar into the tool, bend the bar by operating the tool and read the gauge. You can turn the gauge face to bring the tool back into spec. The tool is not that delicate, just don't drop it. And calibration is not required very often, but is a simple check.

Is the tool needed with '89 engines? I thought they had a self-tensioner?
