Question Sunroof opens by itself on freeway...!?

My sunroof operates up and down perfectly when I press the switch. However, whenever I drive on freeway (about 60mph), the sunroof will raise up by itself (and flaps up and down a little bit by the wind).

I press the button to close the sunroof, but when I speed up again, the sunroof will raise by itself again.

It is raining this week... not much fun when the sunroof raises up by itself and rain leaks in....

Anyone has ideas of what's the problem and the fix? Thanks very much in advance.

With best regards,
- Alex (87 951).

Are you saying the arms raise the roof up, or the airflow over the car at speed sucks the roof open? If it's the later, then the arms are all the way retracted (i.e. where they should be to take the roof off).

it's a rare porsche feature only added on about 20 production cars in 1987.
It generates down-force under certain driving conditions.
Count yourself lucky you have one with that feature.

The arms are retracting too far... when you close your sunroof with the button watch the lifting arms and stop pushing the button just before they retract the whole way. Mine was like this for a while but now its totally broken so i'm converting to manual.

In the meantime I just leave my windows open a tiny bit to create suction from the inside to hold it down.

does that switch in the front part not limit the full pullback of the arms?

It seems is the airflow over the car at speed that sucks the sunroof open (and it flaps up and down a little bit, by the wind). Funny is that I can press the button to lower it back down, but it will open by itself again when I speed up on the freeway...

Is it going to get worse (or some parts on its way to be broken)? I just don't hope it would keep opening during the rain season, and let the rain leaks in to cause water damage to the interior...

I don't know where is the switch (I seldom use the sunroof)... but it seemed the sunroof was pullback fully when I viewed it by standing outside of the car...

I also tried to push it up by hand when it was closed, and it was securely closed (i.e. I couldn't push it up by hand). However, as soon as I drove on freeway, it raised by itself (is the wind sucking force that strong? )

Thanks for the tip. I would try to do that (stop pushing the button just before they retract the whole way) tomorrow because now it is raining hard outside...

May I ask, from your experience, what part would eventually be broken? I have a feeling that I might need to get it fixed before the rain gets heavy this season. Many thanks.

Sounds like one of the microswitches is wrongly aligned - there is a very good sunroof guide on clarks garage.

Maybe the plastic cog wheels are worn. When mine were worn the sunroof always opened at around 130 mph..

Check out Clark's Garage. The switch limiting movement is located in the left rear quarter behind the trunk liner.

I will concour that is a problem with the microswitches probably. They are set in relation to a white plastic cam which rotates. The cam puts pressure on the two switches and will stop the movement of the roof at different positions.

I just want to add, the least of yours problems is rain getting in. Make sure you fix this problem before venturing onto the expressway again. You can very likely end up with your roof panel becoming a giant frisbee if those front latches dont hold.

I hate it when that happens! LOL.

There was a rather infamous poster on the 944 BBS that this very thing happened to. Don't be that guy.

Hey Tifo, do you know the story of the 944S2 in your avatar?

I solved the problems permanently with the Cup car, no sunroof on this car!

Yeah, I know that story .

I have given that "sunroof delete" thing a lot of thought myself. I have access to a complete roof from a delete car and am considering installing it in my car if I keep it.
