The reason why I was laughing is that fortysixandtwo said
No, they look like someone had a lot of time on thier hands and cleaned most of the carbon off with a solvent then started scraped off whatever was left.
You did a great job ... I just found it a bit funny that he pissed on your work without knowing it
Best regards
Ed

Nope, from Rhode Island. I just call it as I see it, not trying to **** on anyones work. Actually you did a good job Lart, that stuff is a pain to get off. And the add says the valves "look brand new" which to me means they are used but cleaned up.

Luis,
You wanna go the full mile, take some cheap $0.99 oven cleaner and shoot on them. The rest of the carbon will be gone with little or no effort.
Then they might look new to even 46n2!!
I just did this before sending the head to John V for some work and they actually do look new, well my head only had 1000 miles on it anyway but it took the carbon off with no work at all.

oven cleaner are you sure? Can I use that in all the other engine components? The block from the engine that I am trying to remove looks great so far I will be posting pictures shortly. Local pick ups will receive a discount (that was a subliminal message for Kevin)

make sure you use the oven cleaner outside in a ventilated are, I know sounds like a stupid thing, but that stuff is nasty, will make your head spin in under a minute.
And no Kevin, it's not a "GOOD" head spin

The oven cleaner trick came from my powder coater.
He used it on my oil pan before putting the heat dispersant on it. The thing looked like it just came from the mold. I was amazed.
Obviously results may vary and I wouldn't be spraying it on any bearing surfaces but the Intake, head deck, cam tower etc. all looked like new before I covered much of them up with powder. Wish I would have taken before and after shots but it was dramatic.
He did warn me that there are some grades of aluminum to watch for heavy heavy reaction, bad reaction. I haven't found anything yet that was averse to using this on. I also have the engine stripped to the bone I would be wary of using the stuff around electrical connections etc...
disclaimer:
results may vary, do not use if you are pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant, do no induce vomitting....
