Why do people replace 951 clutches?
As I understand it, the 951 does not have the rubber-center clutch disc found on some 944 na's. I read about people doing clutch jobs on their 951's but never heard a reason for doing it. What happens to the clutches, do they start slipping or is it to get rid of a chatter problem or something? I have an 86 951 with about 86K on it. The clutch grabs good but does exhibit some chatter. I'm wondering if the chatter is normal for these cars or would a new clutch get rid of it. Thanks.

Clutch disc wears, people add 100 hp or more to their rwhp and want better holding, pressure plate gets weak, TO bearing noise or vibration - if you open it up to replace anything, most people opt to replace the whole thing since you have an intense labor job.

Besides, it's a great excuse to pull the engine, reseal/rebuild it, install a bigger turbo, redo the oil pan, change the motor mounts, install the 2-piece crossover, 3-piece crossmember, etc. etc. etc.
I think to own a 951 for any period of time longer than six months requires a special kind of inherent masochism.

The chatter is relatively normal.
It's when the disc lining wears down to the rivets from use that it's time to replace the clutch and resurface the flywheel. Big job on these cars, but you should be good for another 60K miles.

Other than the usual wearing out or upgrading due to slipping caused by power increases the reason for changing is the springs. The stock 951 clutch has small springs that can break and get jammed so when people upgrade they often go with the Cup Clutch which still has springs but they are fewer and larger so less chance of breaking. If yours is working good now there is no need to change. However, if you are changing the clutch it would be wise to consider getting the Cup disc as a minimum as it doesn't cost much more and should be less problematic.

my clutch was shot when everi would get on boost it would just slip and my rpms would climb but i wouldn't go anywhere LOL. Plus i needed to upgrade since i was putting over 150+rwhp extra then stock.

I changed mine because my clutch fork broke in half. While I had it apart I decided to replcace everything, including master and slave cylinder. In hindsight I should have opted for something better then the "cup" clutch because with my extra power it slips.

I changed mine because my rear main seal was leaking. Since I was in there, I lightened the flywheel and installed a centerforce clutch to hold the 140 extra RWHP.

Well, I found out for myself why people replace them....it suddenly started slipping on me. Tore it apart and found it to be totally shot, worn down to the rivets and everything real dry in there. I replaced all the clutch components and it works like a dream now. The pedal effort went way down and the chatter is gone. Job was a PITA but well worth it. It drives like a different car now.
