Some cars will get an extra 10HP+ with a vacuum pump on the crankcase.
Either way, theres no disadvantages to hooking it up for vacuum, besides an extra hose.

OK, let me get my head properly around this. On the stock system (which is identical to mine to the point the hose comes off) the hose goes straight to a nipple on the intake (I forget where as it's so long since I had stock but it was on the intake pipe of my MAF) and that's it, right? That nipple is between the air filter and the turbo intake?

OK, so I did some searching. Andrew you started with an atmospheric breather and then went to recirculating but with the knock-out tank. What did you see as problems that made you change? What's better after you did? You also drilled out the restrictor, doesn't that mean it pulls too much now it's on vac again? Then again how much vac can it pull; very little with a big, high-flowing air filter surely?
I'm not seeing any problems I'm aware of running to atmosphere and it is a hassle to plumb it to the inlet from where I am now.
