Default Turn Signal won't cancel...

I've searched - maybe I'm the only one who's experienced this...
Everything works fine except one side won't self-cancel after the turn. Is this a repair or replace?
Thx.

I think its a relay in the fuse box. I can't remeber if mine wouldn't cancel or blink at all. Do a search. I drove down to my local VW dealer because the relay in question had vw and audi logos on it. I think it was $20.

This is mechanical. It's in the lever/housing at the wheel. The relay makes them blink on and off.
With mine, the lever won't return to center after the turn...

Sounds like something is:
A.Worn
B.Broken
C.not aligned
D.Not OE steering wheel

It could be the little white lever, it could be the switch it is attached to, it could be the metal tab on the steering wheel.

Pluck the steering wheel and put it back on, sometimes they get a little off(clearance from back of wheel to hub) and it just takes putting it back on.

Probably a replace. You might try 44andmoreparts.com (Arlington)

mine is the same. it canceled fine until one time i held down the lever while the wheel straightened and it made a loud click. now it only cancels about 2/3 of the time; i have to do it manually quite often. oh well, i have better things to spend my money on...

My momo does that. I considered modification, but it is old habit now.
Put the original one back on and it cancels fine.

Same issue on mine, cancels maybe 25% of the time. I always just figured that it was the 968S steering wheel.

The switch assembly will have to come out. On an 86 you won't have airbags, which makes it easier.

Unfortunately, the turn signal switch is not separate like on the early cars, so you may have to replace the entire assembly, and they're not cheap.

Try eBay or Ian's Euro, if you decide to go with a used replacement.

The lever's mechanical mechanism to move back to center when the wheel turns back is worn. Actually it is a little nub that the cancel mechanism catches that gets worn down. It requires replacement of the turn signal lever assembly to fix.

I seem to remember the part is around $180 bucks. I figure I will wait for both left and right to quit before I replace it.

Prices vary from $150 to $235 depending upon if you have an airbag, cruise control, headlight washers, or any combinations of those. There are I think 7 distinct part numbers.

Cool

if the tab pops out in the turn signal switch when you move the lever up/down, the stub on the steering wheel isn't close enuff to cancel.

i put a couple of wraps of electrical tape around the stub and it closed the gap and that fixed it.

That usually works for a while, until the tape falls off.

He's talkin about the tab on the inside of the steering wheel, which hits the tab when you turn it. Lots of older threads about this.

yes there are older threads about this and then you tape it again.

i went to the dance on the old 84944.

partsheaven sent me a used t/s switch + a few other items because my t/s sw wouldn't cancel.
i called them, told 'em it didn't work and they sent another one.

now don't you figure that 1 of the 3 would be ok, nope. it took the tape and any one of the 3 switches would cancel (i had a lot tof time on my hands).

what's your thought, replace the steering wheel?

even if the tape needs to be replaced it's what, 1 min to pull the wheel, replace the tape and torque the wheel nut, 5 minutes total.

Easy to replace the tape, that's what I do. Some day when I win the lottery I'll get a new switch.
