The only time I have ever seen that thing on is if you leave the parking brake up.

Does anyone have a list of the conditions that cause that light to stay on.. or typical reasons for it staying on..

Everything else with the car seems fine

Any other lights on the dash? E.g. there is a low brake fluid light in conjunction w/ the '!'.
Any other symptoms? Poor running, down on power, low boost, etc.?
Does cycling the car off and back on clear the light or is it on permanently?

FYI, the switch that detects that the handbrake is down can move out of adjustment.

However, I will check that out during my lunch break! thanks

I was thinking that but was not sure.

Are their any other typical things it will come on for?

Check for low oil pressure first, and that your brakes are working. If you are okay there, then it shouldn't be a major problem to content with and you should be fine to drive the car. Oil level, brake level and parking brake issues are the most common reasons for the light to come on, my money is on the parking brake switch. Jiggle it and see if that makes any difference.

Regards,

But does your ABS still work Wes? My ABS light on my Passat comes on and off when ever it wants (have NO IDEA why, don't care b/c it is my daily) and when the light comes on the ABS doesn't work.

Airbag light does not trigger center (!) warning light. And on my 88 I'm pretty sure the brake pad light does trigger the center (!) warning light, can't remember for sure though, as I pulled the bulb on the ! light since I have my ABS disabled and got tired of staring at it.

Hand brake switch is likely broken and the wire is shorting out, turning the exclimation point of doom on.
