Default What is a LSD tranmission out of an '87 951 worth?

Just a feeler thread on what a LSD tranmission out of an '87 951 is worth. Tranny is in nice shape, Swepco oil - drains clean - has 130k miles on it.

Thanks,

Geez, could they get a little more dirty on that S box? lol

I currently have two LSD boxes, and only need one. One is an '87 w/o external oil cooler with 90k miles on it, the other is an '86 w/ external oil cooler that was recently rebuilt with an S2 ring and pinion. I am planning on offering both up for sale and keeping which ever doesn't sell. I am asking $1400 for the '87 and $1900 for the '86. Anyone interested?

Regards,

I've got a good non lsd box and a lsd box that has a blown R&P that I will trade you for it. I've got a good used R&P to put in the blown box, so it would just need a rebuild. Anyone else interested in this deal?

How are the 944 transmissions laid out? Are they a cassette type transmission or do all the shafts connect directly to the case?

How much work is it to R&R a 944 tranny?

how do you tell an lsd tranny from a non, out of the car, without taking it apart?

is the part # stamped on the case?

Find your self a lonely street, rev your car to about 5500rpm drop the clutch, if you see only one skid mark on the street is non lsd if you see 2 it's lsd. J/K

Lift the car from the rear spin the tires if they both spin the same way it's lsd if only one spins it's not lsd.

Just be aware that if its a stock type clutch LSD and the clutchs are worn, you may only get one wheel to spin as well, even tho its an LSD unit.

I'd expect any '87 LSD unit that's not been rebuilt recently to be in need of a clutch pack replacement ($$$). Just something to consider.

Clutch pack replacement isn't that bad, its only a couple of hours labor and doesn't require the entire tranny to be torn down.

Ok, having had an LSD and now a non LSD 951 I did not notice a huge difference. I do not track the car.

So my question is unless you track it why do you need it?
TIA

I paid $1000 for an LSD transmission with the lower geared european 5th. The upside for track use is that it is better for putting power down through the corners. The downside is that it robs HP. The verdict on the necessity of an LSD for a n/a is split. I believe that most people believe the LSD is necessary for turbos.
