Ran with a C5 Vette
#17
Keep this on the DL, but driving my (new to me) 951 from Maryland to Kansas this weekend, I *totally* destroyed a C5 (unsure of what variety/mods except is wasn't a Z06 and looked stock) in a couple of runs along the highway, and walked on a later model BMW M3. The Vette didn't surprise me, but I thought the M3 would be some competition, and he faired poorly, despite four attempts on his part.
The new 951 has a Vitesse tuned Ford MAF, custom chips and 55lb injectors. Judging from teh heat at the console, I am also guessing the stock cat is somewhat plugged up. I can't wait to get busy on that and see what happens. Vitesse RULES!

Not to steal the thread. I beat up on a 04 m3 on my way home from the GF house. The m3 had a dianan exhaust and some other stuff. Sounded real nice. Then came a Viper GTS and killed use both. Hey i only have a 4cly turbo vs. 10cly all hooked up. HMMMMMMM

I do wish we had some open road to test out what would happen up top because the 951 just seems to get faster past triple digits. I can't imagine what this car would be like with a Vitesse Stage 2 or 3. I want to get one of his chips so I can get a better idle, but before long the power of a stage 3 would be calling.

How much horsepower (crank or wheels) do you think you are making Corwin?
My car is an 88S and it has Weltmeister chips in it, and a Bursch test pipe. It was dynoed at 260/295 and I believe those are dynojet numbers because they make sense if you estimate 260/.85 = 305 crank horsepower which is 55 horse bonus. Is my car fast enough to beat a C5? I have no intention of finding out..... my ego would like to know.

Faithless: I've never had it to a dyno. Just got the car before last winter. Found it on a local lot all shined up with lots of records. It is hard to guess how much hp it is making. My Volvo is making around 300/330 (a guess from my mods and what others run) or so hp/tq and the 951 *feels* lots faster. Granted it weighs about 250 pounds less and has better balance. I've got lots of plans for the 951, but have spent a little more time and money than I was expecting to this year getting the T5 right. There is nothing quite like pulling on an LS1 Firechicken with a 4 door family sedan though.
I'd say give the C5 a run. I thought he was going to pull me bad, but he didn't and it wasn't from lack of trying by the sound of his motor drowning out mine! Remember though I did this from a roll. I think the C5s 285(?) tires will play a role in going from a stop as those cars can launch very well.

FWIW here are a couple of dyno results for the C5 Corvette and the BMW E46 M3 (from http://www.dynoperformance.com).
The C5 makes about 300 rwhp but has a much, much flatter torque curve than a 951. It's also a heavier car than the 951.
For some reason this particular dyno run was cut short well before redline (the E46 M3's redline around 8000 rpm) but you can see the power still building beyond 6000 rpm. The M3 should do around 280-285 rwhp at the top end. This car makes its power with high revs because the torque is not particularly high at any point. This car is also quite a bit heavier than a 951.

I pulled on a C5 in our VW Phaeton that weighs well over 5000Lb (4.2L 335 HP). He pulled up on me @ 90MPH, I changed to lanes and he passed me. I then realized that he was on it and decided to give him a run after he had a few car lengths on me. I pulled on him and was passing him when the Phaeton shut down @ around 140. Was not impressed with the vette and boy was he supprised to see a huge 4dr passing him @ 135.
