Default Killed the turbo last night

Driving home and couldn't resist opening her up on an open stretch of nice straight road near my house. Pulled from about 2700 to just before redline in 3rd, and when I let off I heard a whooshing noise that sounded similar to an intercooler pipe blowing off. I though, no big deal I'm close enought to just coast her home. Well, as I turn into my street I look in the rearview mirror and notice I'm leaving a HUGE cloud of smoke, and think "oh great, I've blown the headgasket that I just had replaced". Park the car and decide I'll just look at it in the morning. So this morning I start her up and pull her into the garage to work on her, and notice that the it's not a coolant smell but rather a burning oil smell. Ok, so probably not the headgasket, Get under the hood, and I can't find any oil or coolant leaks anywhere. At this point I'm starting to suspect the turbo. Start disassembling the engine, and here's what I find stuck in the turbo:

Here's what the turbo looks like:

So here's where I'm at now:

I haven't checked the play on the turbo, but I'm guessing it's toast. Also, there's was a ton of oil in the intake plumbing and still is in the intercooler (I'm going to take it out and clean it out).

So the big question is, do you guys think everything is ok (other than the turbo obviously)? The nut was actually sitting right on the intake side along with about two quarts of oil. When I pulled the J boot it and all that oil dumped out onto the floor (and boy was that a mess to clean up).

Anyway, thoughts and/or recommendations at this point? My biggest problem at this point is I've pretty much blown my repair/mod budget for the year so I can't go spending huge amounts on a more powerful turbo at this point. As a matter of fact, this repair is going to eat up the money I was going to spend on bigger injectors (although I may go ahead and try to fit them in to the budget while I've got everything apart). Anybody got a spare K26/8 they want to donate to a good cause.

That's a very good question, the impellar is pretty well completely loose in the housing. Guess I'll have do dig a little further and see if I can find the shaft anywhere. Hopefully it (or parts of it) didn't make it into the engine. Even if it stuck in the intercooler, I'd rather have to get a new/upgraded intercooler than have it kill something in the engine.

Oh well, back to work to see if can get the turbo off (never done one before). Might go ahead and pull the intercooler first and see if there's any debris in it.

Lots of oil behind the intake valves. Haven't looked real thoroughly yet. Pulled the intercooler, probably another quart of oil in it. No debris though when I cleaned it out. I'll take some pics of behind the intake valves and post them in a little bit.

Sorry for the damaged turbo, it appears that the shaft snapped. Time for a new turbo! Rebuilding the one you have might prove to be too costly to be worth it.

Just checked behind all the intake valves, everything looks fine (other than a good bit of oil behind #2, which is fully closed). No scoring or debris on any of the valves or walls.

Yeah, I really don't think it's going to be worth it to rebuild this one versus upgrading. The only reason I can really see staying with a 26/8 is if I can find a decent one cheap enough.

Makes sense, a snapped shaft DOD'd something while pumping oil into your intake. W/G, CAT?

Yesterday I took her up to 5800, first ever for me, and I was super paranoid that I had caused some damage. But in true Porsche fashion, she's a champ!

One thing I have to say so far... Thank You to Clarks-garage. The instructions on there are the best. Don't even need a shop manual if you have them.

That happened to mine too, just a few days after I acquired the car.
