Default Widefire HG? Am I being BS'd?

Speaking to a guy from a recommended shop that specializes in Porsches, he told me that the widefire HG was designed to be used with an o-ringed head. According to him, if the WFHG is used without o-rings the cylinder does not mate as well as the stock HG. He did not recommend using the WFHG without o-rings at all.

I know a lot of guys are doing successfully but this is the first I've heard this so I thought I'd give the Rennlist BS test.

What do you guys think.

FWIW, I have no expertise, but I've heard the same.

Tony Garcia started a discussion about the performance between WF and stock head gasket and he found no benefit from the WF just a waste of more money. A much less expensive but good alternative to o-ring is the MLS gasket from cometic.

If you aren't o-ring, I second the Cometic. I put a WFHG in mine just for ****s and giggles, but I, too, have heard it's really no different from the stock HG. I can say that I've done a HG job on an N/A and a turbo, and I didn't see much difference b/t stock and WF. However, I only paid $20 more for the WF and I figured that was cheap piece of mind on an $8K engine!

i managed to blow both the stock head gasket and a wide fire. The difference i saw was the WF did not blow and crack through the stock on did. When the stock head gasket went my car almost instantly over heated but when the widefire went i was able to drive it 30 miles home!! I now have the cometic in my car and besides it leaking anti freeze at one point and now leaking oil it has worked good. It will be kind of hard to blow 3 layers of SS though haha.

Ok so I was wrong the difference between the WF and the stock head gasket is that after it's blown you can drive 30 miles with it. My apologies.

exactly... i would say it is worth the extra 30$ just so you can drive those 30 miles instead of getting towed those 30 miles JUST IN CASE.

Just in case someone is counting on those 30 miles..............

I blew a widefire on track. The coolant dumped in a cloud of steam and hot water, creating an instant on-board skid pad generator. No fun, and no 30 miles. Can I get a refund, please??

As far as an o-ringed head: doesn't that not do a damn thing unless the block is also ringed?
