cpt_koolbeenz,
Please steer clear of the NAPA axles....
They were crap. All of the ball bearings were different sizes, and were a poor match to the races. I got some used, some new races (which really should be a matched set!!!)
One had no grease in it, just sand... SCARY!
Other little problems. I had to build the best set I could from my old axles and my new ones, thoroughly clean all parts, then re-grease (which was okay since I was using Mobil 1 red moly anyways). They really should be built better, and IIRC I only got a 1 year warranty on them...

hey sorry to dig this one up from the dead, but I'm looking at getting a couple of Cardone, part No. 60-7077, half axles, complete with CV's on either end. Is this a "cheaper" axle?

Paragon sells a NEW axle for the 944 and the 951 for under $200. This is the way to go if you run the car hard or track the car.

Totally agree here.

A few years ago I got an axle for my Scirocco, and it was clicking from the minute I installed it, and clicking worse than the old one!!
That same day, I was pulling out of the driveway and the outer CV cage broke. The driveshaft just spun and the car was stuck.

Another time I got an axle from Autozone for the Scirocco, they had the wrong axle in the box, the one i got was from a later A2 GTI so the collar was slightly too big and when I torqued the axle nut down, it locked the wheelbearing up.

I have about a million of these stories--the moral is: don't but ****ty rebuilt axles for decent cars.

I bought two new ones from paragon when I did my refresh 5 years ago, they have performed flawlessly. You get what you pay for and putting power to the pavement, I don't think you want to take a shortcut. No offense intended...

I remember reading something about the 86 axles swapping with the VW bus or something?

I'm just curious if getting the Cardone part number 60-7077 is a wise choice. I was asking if this is the "****ty quality" that i should avoid, or this is considered a decent part that will hold up. I don't abuse the car or launch hard, I just have two worn out cv's and I'm sick of listening to the clicking!

You might want to look at the rebuilt units at 944online. They are a porsche supplier (and sponsor) so the quality should be there. If you try and rebuild them yourself using parts from Paragon, you will spend more money then purchasing the assembly from 944online.

That price is too good to be true if new CV joints are being used. If might be the case that it's simply inspected and repacked....

I can state that they are new units with all the correct stickers to prove it. I have purchased two to date and both have been proven by the test of time. I have run one for 10K miles and 30 track days and it is as clean and true as the day I purchased it. Want to see a picture, I have the car on the lift.

Places like autozone, pepboys, napa, etc. are good for car wash products and maybe oil. Not much else. I'd never trust them enough for actual parts.
