Default Second oil cooler or larger oil cooler ?

This is a reccurent subject but i was wondering what are the pros and cons of each solution for the 951.

The stock oil cooler is not good enough for some applications like track days. So my goal is to lower the oil temp to get approx 120°C on track

As far as i know there are several solutions :

1* add a second stock oil cooler on the driver side (reverse). It uses stock parts, fittings and just need additional oil lines. What about the oil pressure with both coolers and more oil capacity ?

2* replace the stock oil cooler by a larger one. What are the solutions to have a bolt-on (or almost) oil cooler good enough ? What are the fittings in/out of the stock cooler (to choose another one), and what cooler is good enough to be better than the stock one ?

3* add a second oil cooler, but not the stock one. Which one to use, where to put it, what lines does it need ?

If you've done (or thinked about) of this job, i need your feedback

I've seen Mocal, Kiss oil coolers, what else can i use. Here in France, we have some Rally specialists able to made custom oil coolers but i don't know what size, fittings, etc.. i need..

From one point of view, it's a lot easier to add a second (like the Mocal unit), but also twice as many places it'll start leaking from.

I currently have the KISS oil cooler on my car. It seems to function well, and I have not seen any oil pressure dips at the track. However, when I get the chance, the KISS cooler is coming out, along with the factory unit. I plan to throw in a larger capacity Setrab cooler in place of the factory cooler. My reasoning for doing this is two fold, 1) I'd like to eliminate the criss-crossing oil lines under the belly of the car 2) I'd like to free up the driver's side foglight bucket as a potential source of intake air.

Those are my thoughts.

Well,
This is a neat set up that I have seen before that I can try to describe to you. Get a front mounted intercooler that goes right behind the front bumper. This is right between the marker and driving lights. This will give you pleny of room to put a really big oil cooler where the old intercooler used to be. Plus if you have a vented nose panel, it will be like ram air for your oil cooler. Some day when I have the cash for such a project, I will do the same. SFR has the front mounted intercooler kit for sale complete with extended hard pipes. SFR says there intercooler is the best and it would be alot nicer looking then Lindsey's stage 3 with that ugly lifted nose panel(in my opinion). And I know Lindsey has an oil cooler kit. Although I would just measure the space avalible in the stock intercooler area and get what ever fits in there from Jegs or some demostic car parts retailer. Because an oil cooler is and oil cooler. No need to buy a real expensive one if you just need a random size. Anyways, just a thought. Good luck.

My preference would be to replace the stock one by a better one, while keeping stock lines, stock place, etc... what is the good setup for this ?

gotta bump this one... What did you end up doing??

I am currently looking at different types of coolers, but non small enough to fit in stock location and with much higher efficiency.
So two small oil coolers one on both sides seems like the way to go..

I don`t want to put anything infront of the rad/ac or remove the brake cooler ducts.

I have the stock one and the KISS one that Lindsey sells. Now, my car is not a track car, but in the summer time when I drove it, the temps were awesome. It doesn't block anything else from cooling too. And if you go to Terry's web site, he has tested this unit and has hard data to back it up too. I highly recommend it.

Just my thoughts.

Twin setup on the track car, pic

Track temps are good and our extra temp sensor is in the turbo drain, so that's warm. On cooler track days, we average around 250F, warmer summer days we average around 260-275.

GREAT... thanks just what I was looking for.

Btw: Rolex, do you have the kiss oil cooler mounted in the same place as Ski?

Good question, I dont know because Lindsey installed it when they built my car. But I know for a fact they mouned it exactly where Kiss instructed them to. So if you visit the Kiss web site, it will show you where. Check it out.

To answer my own q, Yes.. almost..
Got to do some measuring first...
Don`t want to buy the whole kit, as I could have those hoses made for free.
Shall check with the local mocal or sebtrap dealer.. Thanx.

Positive displacement oil pumps change volume with RPM and volume is extremely insensitive to changes in circuit pressure.

The track cars oil pressure/oil pump acts just like it did with a single cooler: 4.5-5 bar cold, 2.5-3.0 after track sessions. FYI on oil, we use Valvoline 20/50 racing, change it after each event.

Anyone ever try an oil/water exchanger instead? On my other track cars I've always replaced the rad with a thick core rad with a built in oil/water exchanger. Water conducts heat 3500 times better than air. I don't know if there's any drawbacks doing this on a 951.

If you're looking to do what Ski did, keep in mind that the A/C condensor must be removed to mount the second stock oil cooler on the drivers side.

I bought a second stock cooler only to find out that I couldn't mount it - I need my condensor and A/C system.
