Default P/S rack slow leak... advice needed

When I got a PPI on my car, the mechanic told me that my p/s rack is leaking. Basically, if you pry back the boot, it will drip out fluid.

I know that you can remove the belt and use it manually, but I'd rather try to reseal it. Paragon has a reseal kit for $64.95, KLA Industries makes it. Has anybody had to perform this job? Did you used this kit to reseal the rack or are there alternatives? How did it turn out? For 70 bricks, I think its worth a shot to fix the p/s...

Thx guys,
-Sean

The reseal job is not a lot of fun. After doing one rebuild myself, I've just been ordering rebuilt cores from Zims for $270 ($200 core) and replacing leaking racks. Besides the cost of the reseal kit, the "professional" rebuilds like Zims replate all hardware and the housing tube in yellow zinc, blast the aluminum, and polish the center shaft, all something that the home rebuild skips out on. Throw in the couple hours it takes to do a clean rebuild, and it's really not worth doing yourself.

Wow, sounds like a much better way to go. How far does the rack need to be shipped?

$270 Does seem like a pretty good price. Will have to try that. Bruce

I have a rebuilt steering rack from Zim's, it's been on the car for almost 3 years and no problems. Just make sure to flush the system and to clean out the p/s reservoir (there is a filter inside).
