Anybody use 245/45-16 on a 7" rim?

Here's the dilemma...I purchased another set of Clubsports for the 89 Turbo to mount some autoX/track tires on which will be changed at the track. I'm leaning towards Hoosiers or possibly RA-1's. The Hoosier spec sheets say that a 245/45-16 can be mounted on a 7 to 9 inch rim. My thought is that if I get 4 of the same size tire these can moved around to get the most wear out of them. I can mount/dismount and balance tires at work for nothing. My concern is that two fold, 1) will the 245's roll to much in hard corners, and 2) will the larger tires on the front induce too much oversteer? With streeties on, the rear has a terrible time hooking up already and I don't want to make it worse. I don't think there will be any clearance problems as the car is set with about -2 camber, 2.5" springs, and the section width between the 225 and 245 tires is only 1/2 inch. What are the 'Listers thoughts. Thanks.

It'll fit for sure. Lots of older mustangs run 245/45/16 on a 7" rim as I'm sure you know with your SVO. But it's not the greatest for turn-in response. I also wonder if that would upset cornering balance with same size tires mounted on different size rims and hence, different responses at the limit.
If it was me, I'd take the four 9" rims, mount the race meats on those, figure out a street wheel solution and have the 7" rims for snow tires! Or just run RA-1's on the street.
Actually, that's exactly what I did but with the 8" rear rims that were used on my '86. Ran the 8" rims with 245/45/16 RA-1's on the street and at the track. Was going to mount snows on the remaining 7" rims but ended up selling them.

Hugh,
Your thoughts parallel mine exactly. I'm still not happy with the turn in on this car compared to the 330 or my buddy's NA 944. That first quarter turn of the steering wheel just doesn't bit like it should. Hoping to get stickies on the rims and get another alignment with a little more toe out hoping that will help. But your idea of an 8" front rim would be the ticket.

A 245/45 will fit on a 7" rim, meaning the bead will seal and it wont leak air. But it will be bulged and will have some poor wear characteristics on the shoulders. I agree with Wes, I would not recommend doing it either.

I have 225/50-16's on my front fuchs (7") and 245/45-16 on the rear fuchs (8") and fit fine but I won't go to 245/45 for the 7". When going from the 205/55 on the front to 225/50 on the front, I did notice more of the sidewall sticking out then stock. With 245, I think it would be WAY to much tire for the rim.
