Default Speedo, Wipers....

Two intermittant faults have reared their ugly heads on my baby.

1. Speedo sometimes doesn't work when starting off. A light tap on the top of the dash seems to wake it up. Any suggestions?

2. Wipers don't want to park when shut off. Again an intermittant thing, sometimes they park properly and sometimes they just stop whereever they were when I switched them off.

1. Yep mine does this too. From the research I've done, a lot of people have solved this by simply removing the instrument cluster and cleaning the contacts for the instruments.

2. And this as well, although mine tend to park about 5 degrees short of where they're meant to. I can get the to park properly by lifting the arm on the steering wheel to halfway between the off position and the 1st speed position. My brother also had a similar problem on his 5-series, he fixed it by replacing the wiper relay.

I cleaned the contacts on my 86 when I had that problem with my instrument cluster...cleared right up.

Thanks guys. Wipers worked perfectly until my first lap of the ring. There were a few local showers and between trying to learn a new car and fiddling with wipers I was finding myself somewhat distracted from the task at hand.
