Default 951 Headers

ok so last year my car starts heating up.i found out it was the headers because it was cracked.so i took it off the car, took the heat sheilds off.then i went to bring em in to get the flanges welded.after that i brougt it in to get ceramic coated.sounds goo right?WRONG!!!little did i know today(after 6 months of my car sitting waiting for parts)they leaked EVEN MORE!!!i can actually see exhaust smoke in the engine bay!!!!!AWRGGGGGGGGG!!it cant be the hardware, just replaced them with new ones.gaskets?no brand new.it mus be cracked at the bellos or something.just wanted to let anyone know,if they ever have cracks on there headers or suspecting them(because of the car getting hot)get them replaced.i just wasted $150 and alot of down time wating of those headers.im thinking of getting some SFR units(which will take forever to get enough $$ for ) but whats your input on them?stage 1 or stage 2?theres like a $1k gap between the 2.$hit i shoulda put that wasted money to a years membership or something.thanx

Stage 2 for HP, Stage 1 for less HP and less bank. Either way, either option is better than 20 year old second hand ones...

I'm going to repeat what I've "heard" from numerous. GOOD tuners. The stock ex man is more than you need until arounf 450. Buy a decent used version, then have it checked by somone other than who did the work before. Fill the leaks, and save the cash. I never used to abide by this philosphy but, Porsche thougfht they were plenty!

Now if you want to spend the loot, SFR stage II's have atleast one great review!

I agree with ehall, stock flows good enough for power levels you probably wouldn't even go for (470+whp). Used ones are more economic, if you chose this route, try contacting David Mock at www.44andmoreparts.com (good prices on used/new parts and is quick).

I'm going to geuss that your wrong, and the smoke you saw was just "first start smoke"
Riddle me this:
Did it smoke on the first start after doing major work, or at least having work on the headers?
Have you run it since?
When the headers heat up after lots of work (and the engine) All the grease and oil and stuff from your hands as such, and new gaskets and everytrhing burn off cure, etc etc.
I also don't understand how leaking exhaust manifolds would cause an engine to run hot. I could see how if enough exhuast was escaping under the hood, it would run a tad warmer, but nothing substancial.

I hope for your sake I'm right!
~Eyal
EDIT: oh yea! You coated em too! I bet that stuff could potentially contribute to the smoke as well.

If Eyal tells you about header heat LISTEN! He recently turned an entire exhaust into a flame thrower, without leaving the cockpit!

In the words of Ferris Beuller, "Eyal, all I can do is stand here and envy yours."

Stock headers and x-over will be fine for 600 crank HP. It makes a lot of torque and helps spool the turbo with it's small diameter.
You can open up the 951 top end with turbo, head and cam.

You have to watch out that you don't miss tghe point of the 951 engine.....TORQUE.
That's why it has 8 valves, small pipes, long intake runners, etc. To try to make an HP monster from a low-rev 951, you are shooting yourself in the foot.
Best thing to do is get spoolup as low as possible with ANY turbo that you use.
Wonder why Porsche kept the 8 valve on the 968 racing tubo? Ripped everybody out of the corners.
Torque engines are not necessarily second best.

I agree with the technical side of tool’s post – except for this part!
The 968 turbo race version was made for a race series that limited HP to a specific amount (not very high) so the motor was intentionally made as a torque motor and not a high winding HP motor.

Chris, I know - that's my point. The 8 valve is so much better for torque.

Short track, anyone?

"Torque engines are not necessarily second best."

That's what wins races!! Hp just sells them.

Not saying that 8 is better, either I think they both would have a place. You can bet that if I was running Lemans with a 944, I would be stapling one of my 2 16 valve "S" heads onto my car.

Note: just becasue the header etc are "capable of x HP" does not mean there are no HP gains from installing aftermarket headers!
