Default Block Tech Question

Ok so after working on the motor more than any man should it turns out my 86' engine block has helicoils in the block for the head studs. I am wondering does any know if this is a factory thing or did some one put these in before i got my car.

How do you know they are in there? Can you see down into the wells? They are not factory so far as I know. I've used a tap on my stud holes, and am sure I would have got hung up if they were helicoiled. I would have thought helicoils were too weak for headstuds. Timeserts or Big Serts are better and are used on 911 cases for the same purpose.

well my block has helicoils because we ended up pulling one out because it got realllly messed up Sounds like some one put these in before we bought the car. this SHOULDN'T be a problem but these cars are so freakin temperamental you can sneeze wrong at it and it will spontaneously combust

I don't know about Porsche, but most new cars come with helicoils. I think GM also uses Timecerts.
