Default clutch job on jack stands

is this acceptable and/or safe? if i have the car up on jack stands that are extended to ~ 18"? obviously, im mainly concerned about safety, and if thats ok, if I have enough room to do the job

Not a fun job laying on your back (done it twice), but as long as the stands are positioned correctly, it will be safe.

i borrowed a set of mega jack stands from my work that are used to support buses. I had my Pooch 24 inches up. It was easy working under it on a concrete floor but it took some time and two floor jacks to get it up that high but it sure made life easy.

Make sure your stands are actually usable at that height. Many of the cheaper or lower capacity ones have the detents to raise to higher heights, but if you extend them to that height and wobble the platform with your hand (no car on it) you can move the platform back and forth by an inch or more. Better to get another set of jackstands, the big heavy equipment ones, and use them nearer the bottom/middle of their height range. Jackstands are cheap, your life isn't.

I did a clutch job on the S2 with only jackstands a few years ago, but I made sure I was safe by stacking piles of large wooden blocks on a few places, not actually touching the underside but close enough to catch the car in case of accident.....
