Exclamation This is kicking my ***!

I can't seperate my wastegate from the outlet pipe connecting to the test pipe. I have the inlet pipe loose to allow movement but cannot, for the life of me, get the wastegate free from the outlet pipe. It is siezed or rusted to it.

I do have all of the bolts off of the outlet side, the nuts off of the wastegate inlet, and loosend pipe at the test pipe. Ijust can't seem to get the exhaust pipes out nor can I loosen the 15mm nuts holding the test pipe to the turbine outlet either.

I'm so close but Murphey is conspiring against me.

I just can't work this thing off.

Any ideas?

TIA,

Chisel between the flanges? That's not exactly gentle though...

I had to dremel all the bolts out and then beat the **** out of it with a hammer. I thought I'd never get it loose, but I eventually won!

You're really making me look forward to this.

I just wish I could get out of the car first....

I have to summon the ambition to go fight with mine right now. Goddamn bracket that holds that thing to the torque tube. I hate that bracket with the passion of a thousand horny *****.

I hafta drop the entire exhaust just to get access to that effin' thing. . . I swear a more idiotic design could not have been devised.

I'm with you right now PoP.

This started with trying to get the starter out:
The two 17mm bolts holding the starter are hidden behind the heat shield.
The top bolt holding the heat shield to the bell housing is behind the wastegate.
The wastegate is fused to the outlet pipe.
The outlet pipe inserts into the test pipe.
I can't remove the inlet pipe from the wategate because there is not enough free play around the heat shield.

Feel me?

My starter bolts weren't hidden by anything...they were very easy to get to...dont see why it'd be any different for your '88.

Don't forget to disconnect the battery when removing the wires to the starter...

There is one bolt at the top of the heat shield that bolts to where the torque tube enters the bell housing. I just can't get to it to loosen it....

I should take a picture.

Hmm my car didnt have that when I recently replaced the starter, someone was probably lazy (or smart)...possibly me or someone that helped me with the rebuild.

All kidding aside, sometimes you do have to get medieval with it. Beating the **** out of it with a hammer usually does the trick.

The earlier cars mount the WG a little differently the later cars have a flange on the pipe flange that bolts to the cars body
This is addition to the retarted bolts that mount the bracket up in heaven
The earlier cars didn't have this

Ugh, I remember removing mine....
Hammer time, Nah nah nah nah, nah nah, nah nah, Can't touch this....

Sorry, a little too retro I suppose

It was quite an ordeal, it ended up with a good hammering. It was just rusted in there too badly. Sometimes that's just what it takes, especially with exhaust. It seems to corrode the fastest.

yeah the hammer was required for me too. Compared with removing those exhaust bolts it was ok. Different topic i know, but was such a defining moment for my forearms.
