Default Oil Pick-up Tube Questions

1. The oil pick-up and return tubes are attached with a small M6 bolt that screws into a nut fixed to a bracket on one of the tubes. My bolt goes in, but it's tight. Is it a lock-nut, or should I clean the threads?

2. The pick up tube is attached to the block by one of the M10 nuts that hold the girdle to the block. I am trying to figure out if I should put a washer under that nut? Anyone have a picture of an unmolested 951 tube showing it with or without the washer? Anyone have a similar picture of a 968? PET says the 951 uses 7 M10 washers (one for each stud), but it says the 958 only uses 6. All I can figure is that the pick-up tube replaces the washer (except that it looks like it used to have a washer on it)?

Tom, I'm fairly certain that there isn’t a washer on the tube. Also I believe the factory manual says to use some red loctite on the M6 bolt.

There are washers used for both the pickup and the drain tubes, for the M10 nut and the M8 bolts.

The M10 nut washer is not the heavy/thick washers used for the rest of the cradle nuts/studs, it is just a standard M10 washer.

My M8 bolts had two washers on each of them. Not sure why, only that it may help with clearance near the tube mounting brackets (although I still did have problems getting a socket or box end on the drain tube bolt).

I think the key word here is unmolested. My cars are nothing but molested bastards. Tom, I just checked PET did you see where it shows one extra M8 washer?

I've taken appart 4 engines with in the last 12 months and I am thinking there was no washers on the tubes. I think I have all the girdle nuts and bolts in a separate baggy, from one engine, next time I'm near by I'll count em.

The motor (88 TS) Im referencing had not had the bottom end opened up before, so it was "as-is" from the factory.

I dont think that you really need the washer since the pickup and drain tube mounting flange will act as a big/thick washer.

I believe that PET shows the same washer for all bolts and studs (?), which is not what I found on my motor and would not work, since the big washers would not fit up next to the tubes.

Thanks guys, it does seem like they made a change for the 968 oil tubes -- that's the only reason I can imagine PET listing only 6 M10 washers even though there are 7 M10 studs. In contrast, for the 951, PET lists 7 M10 washers.

Anybody recall if the little M6 nut that hold the tube together is supposed to be a lock nut, or does mine need tapping?

On my 951 engine, the pickup itself served as the big thick washer that was used on the others.
