Default 944 Turbo rear drum brakes

Hi,

In our Ontario race series we can drop 400 lbs. from 2750 to 2350 by switching to rear drum brakes. Our main track is Mosport, and offers long straights between corners for brake cooling. Does anyone know what it would take to put drums on the back of turbo suspension?

Thanks,

Andrew Wojteczko

400 pounds?!? All thats back there is two calipers, two rotors, and the pads and lines... I dont see how youre going to save any weight by going drums...

He means the rules will allow him to shave 400 pounds if he switches to rear drums. The weight loss will be afforded through other means.

What drums would you put back there? Is there a 924/944 variant with drums?

This is an interesting concept. 400lb drop would do amazing things for lap times if the brakes would still be adequate.

haha, yeah the rules let us reduce weight.

This is what I am wondering, is there a 924/944 variant that can mount to the turbo suspension?

Thanks,

Andrew

924's were 4 lug. . . and the 931 uses disc rear brakes. Perhaps some VW type 1 aftermarket solution - you know to mount Fuchs on a bug? Willwood?

do you have any idea on how to get rid of 400lbs, or enough weight to justify the brake switch?

technically, there are already drums back there!

(The parking brakes, INSIDE the disc rotor, are drums!)

actually, the reason for switching is because the car is in a class with next to no competition. we can enter the class below and have some people to race against by switching to drums [which would be more than adequete on mosport]. this is a better idea than trying to add 400+ lb's of lead to enter that category...

i'm confused, what all have you seen now?

as mentioned, the car is already close to the 2360 lb weight that would be allowed with rear drums.

The internal drum brakes are not adequate as a primary brake system

I mean: I have never seen anyone on this BBS ask how to *downgrade* their braking system, to drum brakes.....................especially someone who is racing the car. I understand what you are trying to do, but is is quite the unusual question on this forum.

Depending on the track / event I'd bet you'd be better off with the discs back there (if properly balanced / biased) than with drums - even with a 400 lb penalty. Drums are gonna' overheat a lot easier since there's no easy way to dissipate the heat.
