Default temperature issues...need help

Hello all

I just move to a climate where average temperature during the summer hits well above 100 degrees F. When I turn the AC on the temperature guage reads all the way to the two thirds and stays there. When I turn the AC off it goes back down to about half and if I step on it goes even lower to the one third notch.

Is this normal?

Thanks in advance...

That sounds reasonable too me, though a little high. How much antifreeze/water ratio are you running? If you moved from somewhere with cold winters, it's probably a bit too much on the antifreeze side.

You need to install a lower temp switch for the
cooling fans. Also check the condition of the thermo.

Have you confirmed both fans are coming on at high speed when it sits at the upper hash? If it cools off on the freeway, but not in town, there's a good chance your fans are not coming on as intended (which could be the fuse, thermoswitch, or relay). In that climate, you may want to run less coolant and more distilled water (maybe 20/80) and also toss in a bottle of Water Wetter.

Where is it that you live? It was in the 110 range here today and I never hit the top white line with the AC on. The down side is if you have a thermostat that hangs just a bit or the thermostat is sloppy (o-ring gone) it can make you run hot. The 951 will keep a fairy reasonable temp (hlafway or less) until you hit upwards of 110. After that it can run bit on the hotter side with the AC on. Tom's advice helps in the heat.

With a temp of 140F last summer and the ac set on full cold, the temperature was just over the second white mark (around 85C or so).

If the temperature goes high and stays there when the ac is on, and the fans come on, and the cooling system is fine. Then you have a problem with the ac, it could be over filled or have a high-pressure problem. Take it to an ac technician for a check-up.

CG,

Where in AZ are you? It will continue to get hotter so get used to it. If you want you're welcome to stop by my place on the weekends and I'll take a look at it for you. There's usually a small gathering on Saturdays in my garage of guys free-loading tools, beers, and cigars........

140? Really, or figure of speech? Most sources list 136 as the highest temp ever recorded, occuring in Libya in 1922. I've been in Vegas at 117 though (according to the casino signs), and it sure felt like 140.

I am having a temp problem too. But my car keeps dieing. While driving the needle is in the middle but when I come to a stop it shoots to the top white line. After driving and sitting in traffic a while the second fan kicks in but that usually just lets me know the engine will cut out soon. I just brought the car from VA to the Bahrain and I have noticed the coolent is VERY green. I took the car to the dealer to change the coolant and thermostat and I am praying that will fix my problem.

Does anyone know if there is a way to set the fans to run after the ignition is turned off like my 924 did? I know the high temp fan will run but I want it to happen all the time.

That 140 was probably recorded on a Porsche Thermometer, they always read high.

Whatever it is, you crazy people that live in over 90 temps are just cooking your brains. This global warming thing is making Minnesota almost perfect

por4ever: sent you a PM

"Does anyone know if there is a way to set the fans to run after the ignition is turned off like my 924 did?"

That is the thermoswitch 90%+ sure on that

Tom: 136F???????? obviously some mistake, Sudan sees 150F on average in July and the relative feel is actually cooler, somewhere in the 130-140F range. Technically, our highest last summer was 140F, but the rel. Feel was 120F, we have wind.........lots of LOTS of wind that is good in blowing the humidity away........and the sand

When I was a boy, I had to walk 3 miles through flames, uphill, just to get to school....

I dunno, but Nasa says 136: http://www.gsfc.nasa.gov/scienceques2001/20020524.htm

If everything is working right, you should not need to, really! But...you could splice into the two outer connectors on the thermoswitch connector (midway down the radiator tank on the drivers side) and install a toggle switch to turn the fans on and off (in high mode).
