dlr944, are you talking about the unit on the side by the turbo?
No.. there are two balance shafts - one near the turbo and one on the other side of the engine (passenger side). It's near the power steering pump and runs the length of the engine.

Are you sure that you replaced the leaking cam tower gasket? The little round cork one can do that, but I've had leaks with similar results (smoking on the crossover) from the cam tower seal that goes around the base of the entire cam tower where it mounts to the head. Take a look at the base of the cam tower above the exhaust manifold at cylinders 3 and 4 and see if you can spot seepage. It can run from here, down the back of the motor, and smack onto the crossover, no problemo. You should also check that the oilpan gasket bolts are all there and properly torqued. They like to back out over the years.
