Lightbulb OT: Mercedes CL65 AMG 22psi??

I would have never guessed they were coming out of the factory wit hthat much boost. Although that certainly explains the super high hp/tq numbers. But as this article says, there is stll plenty to grow on.

"This isn't about a car; it's about an engine. Forget Vipers, Ferraris, Bentleys, all those rumbling turbodiesel-powered American trucks, and anything else you think has punch. The CL65's handbuilt, twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter V-12 spanks them all, grunting out 738 pound-feet at just 3000 rpm. And that's only because Mercedes-Benz electronically limits it to that number; fully unleashed, it'd be good for a transmission-shredding 885 pound-feet worth. Its 604-horsepower rating almost gets lost in the blur.

AMG's power mongers begin with the architecture of the twin-blown V-12 that powers both Maybach sedans and several upper-deck Mercedes and gives it a significantly longer stroke, upsized pistons, larger fuel injectors, higher intake-valve lift, longer valve-opening duration, larger turbochargers packing 22 psi of boost, a super-large air-to-water intercooler, oil jets that spray the bottom of each piston, and a big oil cooler. This amazing powertrain also can be had in the SL65 AMG roadster."

They are running anywhere 22# boost. Check out these sick videos of the big dogs doing 11 sec 1/4's.

Todd is almost correct. Motor Tred and other magazines, report boost level to be 19-21 psi. On the Maybach is 5.5L, 550 hp,19 psi. CL65 engine is the same, just bigger.

Your right, it is not 22, it is 21.75

I found another source that listed 1.5 BAR.

I'm chat a lot with guys from Renntech, so I know a lot about the 600 and the "65" V12 turbo motors. It doesn't run 22psi till redline. Boost is tapered off after peaking at around 3500rpm. An ECU program upgrade can bump up boost easily. Fully unrestricted (22psi till redline) is possible with outputs of 1000hp (a little less on the SL/CL/S600's due to smaller turbos), but the transmission breaks. The transmission is limited to 600whp reliably.

If you've ever seen a dyno plot of the Renntech V12's, it looks very different. Their ECU upgrade adjusts boost so that the TQ curve is set to drop steeply after peaking at 3500rpm which makes the HP curve completely flat at 600whp from 3500rpm to redline. Here's an old dyno plot from a S600 with first version renntech software:

If they can beef up the tranny, you'll start seeing 900hp 600's and 1000hp 65's .

Rage that sounds a bit strange, trannys don't mind HP's just torque. Setting max boost at 3500 rpm and then let it taper off seems to me like the perfect way to create a torque monster.
If they were worried about the tranny they should do the opposite.

I heard that the power potential is huge but the power is limited due to transmission failures.

Imagine that much power and a 7-speed gearbox.. Yummy..

Actually, I just saw a video of a race with a CL65 stock and a highly modfied 03 Cobra. The results prove what Rage is saying.

At the launch the 65 had a full car length on the Cobra, in about 2 seconds but by the top of 2nd and into 3rd the Cobra had caught the 65 and passed.

That's what I thought too. But I was told otherwise.
