It's easier to just have a competent exhaust shop put in a straight pipe in place of the cat. Make sure they are careful and tell them ahead of time that the pipe is double wall so that they don't colapse it when cutting the cat off, but it shouldn't cosst any more than about $50. You'll notice a big improvement in how hard/fast the boost hits, and it will be a little louder. Definitely one of the best mods you can do.

From what I have seen you should only see improvement if your cat is bad in the first place. Chances of that in a 20 year old caris pretty slim but cats don't restrict much as long as they are high flow and in good condition.

If you do want to get rid of the cat don't waste your time gutting it.. Too loud and makes a mess.. Let the muffler shop do it.

Do you have the stock cat-back exhaust?

I do...and a test pipe turned a whisper quiet car into an audible machine.
If you dont have the stock cat-back it may be too loud for you...

There was also a noticable decrease in turbo lag and I think a noticable difference in power.

Do you have emissions testing in nanuet?

MY cat is gutted and i would recommend it totally. If your exhaust is stock, the gutted cat sounds very nice, not loud by any means, just nice. The increase in power is noticable and i would say one of the best "bangs for the buck" mod on these cars! IOne thing to make sure of is that you dont have to do emmisions testing in your state!

well loud i really dont care cus i have 1967shellby with 450hp to the wheels with long tube headers and 3inch exhaust. it doesnt get any louder than that. i just dont want my car to sound high pitch (HONDA) like cheap sounding you know. i love the deep sounds. thats prob what am prob going to do this weekend. mine is all stock. and for emmisions testing i have friends that can take care of that lil prob for 50 bucks.

I gutted mine, Peak boost occurs 200 rpm sooner, It is slightly louder on full throttle
but no louder at idle.
It was a very small change over all.

If you are going to do this, go to a exhaust place and have him put in a straight pipe and have him make it so you can put the cat back in. I thought emissions was done in CT and now its back and i have a punched out cat so i don't think im gona be passing any time soon.
