Default Little Tech Talk

So I was talking with a buddy of mine the other day. He is big into DSMs and the rice scene. So he was telling me about this anti-lag method that some high power output DSM owners are using to basically....anti-lag their huge turbos. Basically how he explained it was compelety retarding the timing and continue to pump fuel in. This would create a type of combustion into the exhaust systems because the exhaust valves would be open. I probably can not explain this correctly because I do not understand timing as much as I'd like to but that is how he explained it. I know that retarding the timing increase EGTs...and advance would obviously decrease. He talked about rally cars using this setup. That they are continually anti-laging while not on the gas. So, my question is this....does this system work, what situations would it be helpful in and of course to make it relevant....would there be any need for a 951....hehe. I thought I would share this with you to hear what your thoughts are because there are some brillant minds on this forum.

A quick rise of the turbocharger's temperature (which jumps from ~800°C to the 1100°C+ region) whenever the system is activated
#

A huge stress on the exhaust manifold and pipes (mounted on a street car a bang-bang system would destroy the exhaust system within 50-100 km)

The explosions which occur in the exhaust tubes generate important flames which can, sometimes, be seen at the end of the exhaust tube

I wonder if the guy who wrote the article in that link ever actually talked to anyone who runs anti-lag. My guess is no.

As with most things found on the internet you should not trust an article like this blindly. I did a quick google search for "wrc anti lag" and this was the first hit that actually described an anti lag system. It should not be considered the ultimate truth. For those really interested I suggest further research.

I have seen a 951 run with this method.
Spool was nuts fast. 26/6 and IIRC 320ish at the wheels, almost everything stock but the chip. Even has the stock wastegate and cyclic valve.

yup. i saw that car to. on the dyno.

I was actually thinking about doing this to my car once its boosted. except having it always on at idle I would make it so when the computer sensed high load at low boost it would retard the timing for a quick second to get flaming gas to the trubo to spool it up.

streckfu. the car was completely stock.

it only had this chip that retarded timing. and prolly some other electronic functions.

i think I actually have a video.
