When I had to buy a new trans for my car, one week into buying it , I paid $2.2K for a Turbo S trans with 35K on it. Pretty damned good deal if you ask me.

I would agree with Dmitry and Dan...
Jake 944CS,
If they are so easy to come by, find me a good condition, low miles 951S trans would you please? For about $1000-1500 it would seem based on your $3k for engine and trans.

I paid $4K for a stock rebuilt S motor with zero miles on the rebuild. Good rebuild by a reputable shop in the midwest.
Maybe not a bargain but I was please with the engine. It was a very easy engine swap as the harness, everything was hooked up and ready to go.

thanks guys...one more question - would this be a direct bolt in to a 1988 944 Turbo (non-S) - will I need the '89 Turbo S KLR and DME - what else will I need to make it a plug-n-play?

Sorry, not sure what your point is.
I paid $4K for a zero mile rebuilt TURBO S (sorry) 8v motor complete with clutch bell housing etc.... Didn't know if it was a bargain, based on prices here, still don't know if I got a bargain, but I have been pleased so far with it.
I put it in an 87, so swapped all of the DME, KLR and wiring harnesses. It was really quite easy and fun once we got into it. Would never go out the top again but that is in a different thread....
Now heading for the spindles and brakes next week...
