Default Piston ring help X-post

Well, I've searched the archives and checked Clark's and can't find an answer. I am installing my pistons (crank and oil pump done last night, but I broke the last oil pump bolt ) and the ring keeps popping out b/t the ring compressor and the cylinder. I've tried 5-6 different times (and ways) but it keeps doing it. The middle bottom ring (the one that is in between) seems to be too large for the cylinder. I checked the tolerances of all the other rings and they are within specs. Any ideas?

not to hijack the post or anything, but since we're on the topic of ring installaiton, how should they be oriented upong installation? the gaps should be at 90 degree angles correct?
