Oil temp sender selection
I'm planning to add an oil temp gauge by tapping into my drain plug.
It looks like the drain plug is 20mm, so I'm wondering what size sender to get.
http://www.egauges.com/vdo_send.asp?...00F_150C&Cart=
Temperature Sender: 300F/150C 3/8-18 NPT $12.50 $8.75
It seems like the 1/8" NPT threaded one would be the best bet since it gives the smallest hole in the drain plug, but there is also a 10mm metric one.
What are the benefits of the tapered NPT vs. standard metric ?
The 1/8" is also attractive because of the price - if I decide to ditch it and tap the pan later I wont feel bad.

My Autometer oil temp gauge came with a sender, there was a gentleman who used both the oil drain plug and the banjo bolt on the oil return line for mounting the sender. The difference was barely noticable (if you are concerned on location).
At the machine shop, i believe they drilled/tapped a 6mm hole for the sender on the banjo bolt, does this help?

The sender and thermal protection (the red stuff) comes from a racing shop. The black plastic protection (closest from the sender) is a part from Porsche ;-) (Part # 999.659.006.50)

I just installed one of these and did the following:
- got a cheap oil plug without a magnet from NAPA - $3
- got the 1/8" NPT sender
- at a specialty tool store, got the correct drill and tap for the 1/8 NPT threads ~ $15
- used a drill press with a holding jig; drilled a hole in the center of the NAPA plug
- threaded the plug hole
- installed sender with noooooo teflon tape (but did use a little aviation sealer)

Thanks anders confirming the oil plug drain size asM20. Now where to get a male to female M20 reducing bushing from? I have checked 20 sites including Mc MAster Bushings.com........ No one does that size.
ANYONE offer help of which store stocks them?

Re-resurrecting an old thread. I discovered an easy way to mount and wire the temp sender on cars with the oil level sender, if you don't mind losing that. I haven't had the level sender working in years, so I made a blockoff plate for the hole where the sender goes and tapped it for the oil temp sender. Then I used the wire that goes to the level sender. It was white with a yellow stripe all the way from the sender and comes into plug A, the leftmost plug of the 3 plugs that run your gauges. I clipped it and extended it to my temp gauge, and it worked. Ground that wire that goes to the dash, and you won't get a low oil light. Really easy.
While I was jacking around in there, I also repurposed my rear defroster switch (I have lexan), to be an on/off for the anti-locks. I think most people just use an interrupt button, but I prefer being able to turn them off to test brake bias.
Happy harness butchering!
