Default value of TurboS hub and spindles?

I'm thinking of buying a used pair of hubs and spindles off of a TurboS to keep as spares.
I may decide to buy just the hubs as it seems like a lot of people are breaking them at the track these days.

What is the going price for a hub and spindle? Since I don't know the condition of the wheel bearings I'm planning to replace those.

If anyone has them for sale let me know.

Thanks,
Jerome

Well, back to Econ 101: A price is determined by suppy and demand.

1) Note 1: The supply is limited.
2) Note 2: The demand is high.

Figure that a used turbo S spindle or hub sells for about 70% of new.

If you want new, you should order it now, since the last order that I heard of took six months for PCNA to fill.

I "gave away" a set of spindles, calipers, brake shields and hubs from a TS to a good friend for 1K. They were in a need of a rebuild (bearings/calipers) but were otherwise good shape. We are both happy with the deal. I wouldn't be surprised if other sources asked for 2x that.

I sold a pair of Turbo-s spindals for $450 last year. Seemed to be the going rate at the time.

Wow, with these prices why hasn't someone machined a copy and started selling them? (Econ 201) Gotta be a fairly easy job for a CNC machine. I'd gladly donate a hub to be used as a template.

I'll make an offer below market just to see if I can get them for cheap. Kinda hard to sink a lot of money in spares.

I concur with the others as to the astronomical asking prices. It is really too bad Porsche didn't beef them up on all models. It probably would have been cheaper for all involved.

I saw one post on here showing a pic of a hub that broke on a TS car, I think it was from Sebring (?). Have you heard of others recently?

As far as finding/buying spares, you may be better off trying to find a whole parts car. I knew a local guy that parted out an 88TS, and I ended up buying pieces and parts and some more parts and some other pieces (ended up with a complete engine, front brakes/hubs/spindles, and ABS sytem. I got a good deal on all of it, since I helped him disassemble the car, but In the end, my purchases alone paid for the whole wrecked car plus some....

Also, you can be more frugal with your purchase. If your car was broke and you needed a hub, its worth more to you than if you are just keeping an eye open for a good deal on one to have as a spare.

And now that there are plenty of big brake adaptor kits available for the non-TS spindles, the demand for the TS parts is less. Again hard to put a value on it, but I dont think the spindles and hubs are worth more than $600-800 for a set (high end).

OTOH, a complete set of spindles with struts, F & R control arms, CV joints, and springs sold on eBay last year for $212 for the whole shebang. I'm STILL mad at myself for missing that auction.

Why do we all have spares of the things that broke. I want a spare of the thing that is going to break next!

Here's details on what can happen with hubs & spindles:

HUB:

SPINDLE:

Not my car, but a classic case of spindle failure in a 944NA.
This is a very cool real-time shot of the wheel bounding away from the car. It was on the out lap before the race started, so no animals were injured in the making of this picture.

OUCH! What a painful pic! I'm curious, do phone dials (late offset, obviously) fit on a Turbo S? By your sig and the pics, I'm guessing they do. Hmmm.. I've never seen that before. I wondered if maybe they didn't clear the MO30 stuff.

So the real question remains:
With all the recent failures of TS hubs and spindles, are they really stronger or better than the early offset hubs?

Yes, they are stronger... You would come to the same conclusion were you to look at a couple side-by-side.

The reason that turbo S hubs are breaking is due to the huge forces that are being transmitted through the large wheels and tires and the larger forces due to higher cornering and braking forces...

I doubt that my 83 944 hubs will break with street tires and my gentle driving (even on the track...)

Yea, these things are breaking a lot lately.

I would polish them and get rid of any corners/edges (to get rid of stress concentration areas) then have them magnafluxed once every couple years if I drove on the track.

Fatigue failure at its best!

I just bought a set of Turbo S spindles with no hubs to upgrade the 87 to Turbo S brakes/engine...are the hubs different than on an 030 car?

Yep. These are magnesium turbo cup wheels, but regular phonies were available for the later cars. Came with the car, but I moved to the 17"BBS.
