Question Do I need to use any kind of sealant on the water pump gasket?

Can someone tell me if I need to use any type of sealant on the water pump gasket, and if I do does it need to go on both sides? Also what are the torque specs on the bolts? Thanks!

No..manual says 8 Nm or 6 ft.lbs. secured with Loctite 270. But, be carefull these M 6 bolts strip real easy.

I used Ultra Grey on mine, both sides IIRC. This is one of this things where some people will say A, others will say B, then someone will prolly say "Theres a gasket there?" or in otherwords, 1

Any paper gasket in a hot situation can benefit from a smear of Permatex Hylomar. It helps the seal, but most important it never dries and simply releases the gasket on teardown. Also advised by PCA's 944/951 Tech Guru, George B of 944 Ecology.

I used Permatex Copper Spray. It's rediculous over-engineered for the situtation (I think it's used on headgaskets), but it will not leak a single drop. It will be hard to scrape off when replacing the pump next time.

That's why I recommend the Hylomar... After 20 years, the sealant will not be hard and will clean up with some brake cleaner. I've sworn off using gasket scrapers and abrasive wheels to clean up a surface before attaching a waterpump, or a camshaft housing, etc.

I use Hylomar on water fittings with paper gaskets.

George, do you place it on the block side of the gasket or both?

Both sides. George's advice. I just followed it, and am a happy camper. Had to remove a couple of water fittings recently [heater block-off, turbo water take off from the head] and they came off like butter.

I put in on both sides of the gasket... never had a leak.

I learned about Hylomar from my first NY mechanic. He said that Rolls Royce used to use it on their cars.

Because he was a thief and a bad man, he put me in a situation where I wanted to buy tools instead of his time. Eventually my desire to be independent of his shenanigans led me to owning my own business.

It's funny, the things that happen along the way...
