Question Water pump size problems

Just purchased a water pump from Vertex. Exchanged the one off my spare engine, also an 87 T motor. I thought the new part looked diferent some how, and decided to test fit on spare motor. The pump will not lay flat on the block. The wheel on the pump (internal) measures 3", and the indentation on the block measures 2-3/4". Part number on the new part is 944.106.124.2R. The pump has the port for the turbo and the belt guide.

So do I have the wrong part?
I haven't removed the pump on my running engine, but I bet it has the smaller pump also.

I would appreciate any thoughts.

You got the wrong pump. You need 951 106 021 08. The 944 nu9mber is ro an NA motor, and I suspect the pump you have is for a 2.7 Liter motor.

The only difference between the pump I had and the one recieved was the the 2R vs the 1R at the end of the 944 number. I know there were some upgraded 944 pumps that were interchangable as they had the coolant nub for the turbo. Thanks
