Default Value of this '86 944 Turbo

I am selling my 993 Cab and have someone who is interested in trading me his VERY nice black on black '86 944 Turbo.

I'll list what I can remember right now about the car, but want to get an idea from you guys as to what you think it's worth (have had a lot of 911's over the years, but know next to nothing about 944's):

Color: Black on black

Mileage: Approx. 65,000

Condition: I'd rate the car a very strong 9 to 9 1/2 out of 10 (and I'm terribly ****, so to most people, this car is just about perfect). Very nicely detailed (could eat off the chassis and engine)

Upgrades I can remember right now: Polished 8" front and 9" rear Fuchs, chip, aftermarket exhaust (runs all the way from the exhaust manifold to the back, but can't remember the brand), adjustable Koni's, lowering springs

The current owner is the 3rd owner, and he bought it back in '96. He has all the books and records, and his Porsche mechanic is my Porshe mechanic, who tells me the car needs nothing, and is the nicest 944 he's ever seen.

Any idea of what this car is worth?

Thanks!

86 turbo's have been getting between 7k and 12k lately,... if it is as nice as you are describing and all the work is up to date,.. Belts, Waterpump, Front seals ect... I would say between 10k and 12k but it is hard to say without pics. I have seen a mint 951 go for 13k but it was an 88'

Maybe $7K-$10K depending on how long you were willing to wait for the right buyer. When I was looking for one last Nov-Dec I saw several very nice ones (8-9 out of 10) that went for right at $7500. These where 86-88s so I'd probably bet on the low end of that range at $7K to be safe. Of course, with the market on these cars, it's really hard to tell sometimes and really just depends on the buyer.

60,000 is pretty low mileage for an 86. if the condition is truely 9-9.5 out of 10 (and you aren't exaggerating) I would value it above 10k for sure. especially if it has full service records and recent timing belts /waterpump done.

I've seen a few 86 951's with 150,000 to 200,000 miles in 7.5 to 8 outta 10 go for $6500-7500.

I'm not exaggerating when I say this car is that nice.

I own a pristine '91 NSX that's never been in the rain ever, that I put on jack stands twice a year to detail the chassis that's a bit nicer than this car, but the 944 is pretty close. It's got to be one of the nicest 944 Turbos out there I would think.

All the services (timing belt, water pump, front seals) are up to date as well.

65k miles Pristine condition with all records. Easy 10k+ car maybe as high as 12k to the right buyer. Some may say 7500 but for that money I would expect to put in some wrench time soon.

FWIW I just recently bought an '86 951 realistically in condition 8 (a very nice car just needing a few minor cosmetic details) with only 68k miles and paid a good bit less than 10k. It is fairly extensively modified, which can increase or decrease the value depending on your point of view. I happen to think I got a screaming deal.

Personally I hit a wall at 10k for an early 951, no matter how nice unless it's one of the very first and has under 10,000 miles (collector quality). I've seen pristine 89 turbos go as high as 17k, but that's really the exception. If you're taking it on trade, take no more than 10k for it (might consider 8-9k) and be prepared to hunt for the "right" buyer at that price. I think it's worth a little more, but you have to hedge your bet.

From the description I'd say if the seller held out he could get $12k.
What people forget is that even though there are tons of $6k turbos out there, the amount of pristine ones are getting few and far between. For a trade in value I wouldn't feel bad about alotting $10k.
Cheers

Mike
If thats the car I think it is (owner in Brentwood, had a red 86 that he crashed
at road atlanta) it is easily a 10k to 12k car. It's as close to showroom as any
86 I've seen. Plus doesn't it have the full leather sport seats and M030 suspension?

I paid 11k for mine with the same mileage and sounds like the same condition two years ago and from what I have seen I think I got a decent deal on it. The old saying applies, "YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!!"

tconn,

Yes, it's the same car you mention, and it has the M03 suspension and leather seats. Can't remember if they are sport seats or not, since the last time I saw it was last year (before he crashed the red car at Road Atlanta).

He wants to trade for my pristine, highly upgraded 993 Cab, and I'm just trying to figure out what his car's worth.

Searching recently completed auctions on e-bay certainly produces several comps at the upper end of a $10k-12k+ valuation for the car you're describing. These cars garnered bids of $10.3k-$14.5k, and none of them are anywhere near as nice as the one you're describing. That florida car, in particular, looks extremely sketchy (sold by a dealer/wholesaler, worn shift **** and wheel, tired stone guards, wires hanging out from under the dash). Granted the Oklahoma car that got over $14k was an '89, but I'd rather own the '86 that you're describing. The misplaced turbo emblem and huge dash cracks do nothing for my confidence -- nor does the fact that the guy has owned it for all of 6 months. The $12.7k S with the leaks and weeping waterpump seems like a mixed bag, although I suppose a belt/seals/waterpump job would address it. The guy hasn't owned it for long, though, which would set off alarm bells for me. The $12.6k "concours" car with the cracked stone guards, cracked dash, etc. and 114k certainly doesn't sound better than the '86 you're describing. My favorite is the car that got a $10.3k bid even though it's being sold by someone with a dismal feedback score who is " located in Canada, however, the car is on a clean Massachusetts title and can be picked up or shipped from Buffalo, NY." The red car with the Fikses that garnered $12.6k looks pretty good, although one wonders about the incorrect turbo badge and missing cap on the RF wheel. As nice as that '86? Maybe. Maybe not. There is a low mileage '87 that has 1 day to go right now with 11 bids and $10.6k so far. It looks better than these cars, but who knows what it's like in person?

In your specific situation, you'll have to decide what makes sense, I suppose. Do you actually want to the keep the car? I can't see wanting to take on the hassle of selling someone else's car, and I wouldn't personally buy a car from someone who's owned it for a short period of time and is "selling it for a friend" or "got it as part of a deal." If you're looking for a nice, unmolested car to add to your collection, it sounds like you could work something out that would make good sense.

A car like that could be worth up to 17k. Most of the 944 t I have seen with low mileage easily sell for over 11k.

Recent 87 with Sport seats, LSD, Fiske wheels went for $12.6, 72k on the odo.
My brother in laws showroom 87, 32k, ABS, Sport seats, 18" OZ wheels, was $16.
Both cars listed above were 9.5 cars.

My 87, black/tan, 70k when I bought it, stock, no options, records, was $8700 5 years ago.

I think since the guy on Fifth Gear has said the 944 turbo was one of his top 10 favorites, it seems the prices are creeping up a bit. The car you mention sounds great, I would say on the high side 13.5, low of 10.

The '87 I mentioned went for $13,600 in Indiana.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...&category=6434

Looks like a nice car with 40k miles. However, it's unclear from the ad that the seller is actually a long time owner. The car is stated to have records, but no specific services are mentioned. The interior looks great, but there is a funky cup holder in place of the ashtray, some sort of odd mount for a cell phone, and a wack-a-doo late model stereo that looks, er, out of place. A super nice car? Probably. All mods reversable? I assume. All services fully up to date? Perhaps the high bidder found out and the answer is yes. Concours condition fuchs? Nope -- phone dials whose condition isn't quite clear from the digital photos, but probably quite nice.

The '86 you're describing seems to be at least the equivalent of this car too. Hope this helps. Who drives around (very little, apparently) in a concours car with a cup holder full of starbucks coffee while yacking on their high mounted cell phone that is bolted to the A/C vent? Odd.
